I am taking Warfarin and my eyes are blood shot. Could this be caused by the drug?

Don't worry, I often wake up with a red eye or two when I am on warfarin. In fact at the moment half of my left eye is bright red. Certainly get reassurance from a GP or Pharmacist but unless you have other symptoms with the eye sounds like another Warfarin effect.

Hi Katherine

Definitely check with your doctor, but it's often an anti-coagulant thing, even a small piece of grit slightly cuts the eye and the whole eye goes bloodshot, had it a couple of times. Get it checked just in case.

Be well

Ian

Just had my second bout of that in 3 months, going to put it on my inr form. (they ring you if concerned)

I have been having a similar problem with my right eye recently. I wear contacts, the sort that you can leave in for for upto a month, and would find that my eye would become bloodshot and quite sore a few days after putting the contacts in. After taking them out my eye would slowly improve over several days.

I too wondered if this had anything to do with starting on warfarin. I discussed it with the Sister at my RNI Clinic and she thought that it would be possible if the eye had been damaged, as suggested by Beancounter, but she wasn't aware of any reason that warfarin itself might be the actual cause.

I then visited my Optician who diagnosed a viral infection in my right eye and the need to leave my contacts out for a longer period in order to give time for the infection to clear. In my case this seems to have been correct and is probably the result of a, rather long lasting, cold.

Hello Katherine: I've always had a tendency to get bloodshot eyes (e.g. after sitting in a draught), but it has gone worse since I went on to Warfarin. Usually clears up pretty quickly.
