Hi Karim

I've never had an ablation but I am sure you will get answers from those who had, but no-one can tell you exactly what the outcome will be. You need to be discussing this with your EP, and it will depend on your symptoms, how long you have had AF, the severity and any other challenges you might be facing.

It's not a straightforward decision

Be well

Ian

That's a huge question. Everyone is different and a good and lasting result depends on many factors, such as the length of time you have had AF as well as other health and lifestyle factors. The short answer is yes, it is as good idea to have an ablation if you are a candidate. Make sure you choose an EP and medical center where the do a lot of ablations. Experience really makes a difference. How long it will last depends not only on the skill of the person who did it, but on the lifestyle changes that you make before and after the ablation. Eating right, avoiding a sedentary life style, sleeping well, avoiding stress all make a difference in that statistic of how long lasting the result. Good luck to you. Wishing you NSR forever.

"For good" is a difficult state of affairs. Ablation can improve quality of life for many people and the chance of living without drugs is an attractive option for many of us be it one, five, ten years or forever. I have been AF free now for six years although I do get some occasional arrhythmias and live largely drug free as far as arrhythmia is concerned but it took three procedure to get there. We are all different and no two cases are the same so you really need to discuss with your EP and decide what YOU want.

You don't say whether you have paroxysmal AF or persistent AF because that makes a difference. Also have you been on medicines?

Karim. For the last 18 months Aspirin is no longer regarded as an anticoagulant by NICE and AFers should be prescribed warfarin or one of the NOACs if anticoagulation is appropriate. See the main AFA website.

Good luck tomorrow.

I had ablation two years ago and it is a huge improvement. However you need to consider if it is currently impacting your life as if you have very little symptoms and only a few episodes you may not need it. Talk to an EP that you trust.

Most important, get on warfarin or one of the newer anticoagulants immediately. That is the most important thing right now.

Good luck

I've had quite a few ablation and none of them have kept me af free permanently. But have improved my quality of life.
