Hi Vdl1

You do not usually have to stop taking warfarin, but depending on your INR level you may have to reduce your dose to get a little bit lower in your therapeutic range. You should ask your dentist what they need you to be. You should contact your anticoagulation clinic/GP, depending on where you get tested, at least two weeks before your dental appointment.

If you are self-testing then you may have to test more frequently in the run up to your appointment.

Make sure you have adrenaline free local anaesthetic.

I had a wisdom tooth extraction and kept taking Rivaroxaban without any problems.

A friend of mine was on warfarin but her dentist recommended going on to rivaroxaban before he would undertake much needed dental surgery.

Best wishes,

When I was on warfarin, my dentist wanted an INR (within 24 hrs) showing a reading under 3. Involved going for a finger prick reading the morning of the dental appointment.

Hi, I had an implant last year and was told to keep taking Warfarin as long as the inr was under 3.0.

Every thing went well until I got home. The bleeding started after an hour so I returned to the dentist who gave me new swabs every hour for 7 hours. Eventually he sent me to A and E where they tried adrenaline soaked swabs. At midnight I was given a vitamin K injection and my blood started clotting within an hour.

It was a very unpleasant experience and I wouldn't have another implant without stopping taking Warfarin first.
