I'm not qualified to answer that question but if you didn't have AF before I can only guess that in fitting the pacemaker it may have short circuited some pathways. Remember that pacemakers pace the ventricle not the atria so you can have AF with a pacemaker. The difference is that the ventricle being paced continues to supply blood to the body so the worst symptoms of AF are avoided, you just feeling the wobbles inside..

Hi Huntsville, I am in the same situation as you. I had a pm installed because of heart stoppages and shorty after I developed a/f. I have always felt that somehow the leads had disrupted the circuitry and started the a/f. That`s my gut feeling not any medical research there. I often wonder how common this is. Be well
Hi
I have a dual chamber pacemaker which works on my atria as well as the ventricles. Sorry Bob you can get ones that pace atria as well, it was put in because although I already had af my heart would go dangerously slowly at times.
As has already been asked why did you need a pacemaker in the first place, as that will dictate the sort of pacemaker you have. Cannot explain why you should have gone into af following the pacemaker, but wander as it didn't happen immediately whether in fact it is unrelated

That sounds so disappointing.
You get pm and have this.
what is your Cardiologist saying?
Kind Rgds,
Just out of interest, I had been out of af for over 3 months when I had my pacemaker fitted. (I needed it to prevent me losing consciousness when spontaneously coming out of af). Within minutes of it being fitted, I went into af.
Since then, my af has been much more persistent and has begun to require cardioversion to stop it.
Coincidence or what??
wilen
Reply to huntsville: I had a pacemaker implanted in June 2017 and I also went into Afib immediately after it was implanted. First check- after 1 week showed I had been in Afib 100% of the time. 2nd check- 6 weeks later showed I had been in Afib 75% of the time. I was advised to go see my Cardiologist. He put me on Bisoprolol & Warfarin. It was end of Sep/2017 before we got the INR levels right but since then I have felt better but still suffer breathlessness and fatigue. My next appointment for PM check is Feb/2018. Meanwhile, I have appointment with EP to discuss ablation?? I am 76 year old female and I live in Ontario Canada. This is just to let others know that getting a pacemaker may well have saved my life because my heart rate was often as low as 27 and missed beats of 3.5 seconds, however, it has created this other problem of Afib. I see that huntsville's submission was 3 years ago and I would be very interested to hear more about your situation and how things are going for you now.
