Hi all,

Thought I would introduce myself.

My name is Maria. I was diagnosed with AF in Feb after two episodes in a month of SVT while pregnant with little darling no3. The worst episode saw my HR at 190-200 and me needing adonise (spelling)to bring it to order. I have just decided to go ahead and have an ablation. When not on beta blockers my resting HR is 120. I've had palpation attacks for years but never really got round to seeing the gp about them.

I've just been changed from atenolol to bisoprolol.

I also have lung disease which they are investigating the cause. This causes me almost continuous SOB.

I am married, 35, never smoked and slightly cuddly. My eldest is 4 and then its 3 and 12 weeks.

HI Maria and welcome to the club. We have all been there so no secrets as it were. Any worries or questions there will be somebody to help you. Good call on the ablation many people wait too long. I had three before my problems got sorted so it can be an ongoing treatment.

Hi Maria, welcome! I'm really impressed that you are talking ablation with your doctors so early, I have to say I've had full-blown AF for over four years now and there's never been as much as a mention so you are lucky. Congratulations on the new baby, I am guessing that they are keeping you very busy! I am on bisoprolol too. Hope that you are managing with all the busyness, take care... If you have any questions, this is a great forum - everyone is very kind and very happy to provide support and information where we can.

You will find this site to be an amazing source of information, understanding and friendship. I am also waiting to have an ablation. By reading posts here I understand what to expect during and after the procedure. I was particularly helped by Bob saying that it was preferable to tooth extraction.

I was prescribed 4 different types of beta blockers, atenolol being the first. I have just come off Bisoprolol. Over time I developed wobbly legs and couldn't stride out or walk far. Two days after coming off Bisoprolol my mobility was restored. It may result in you having bouts ot breathlessness too.

Hi. I was interested in your comment of the effect on your legs and walking. I have been on 5mg of Bisoprolol for years now and have constant difficulties in walking, principally because of pain/swelling in my feet and legs. It does come and go and the doctor considers it just a side effect of the AF. Did you have similar pain or swelling and has the switch from Bisoprolol helped?

Hi Muzz. I was on 10mg Bisoprolol. I did have slightly swollen ankles each evening but no other side effects except for the trouble with the walking and bouts of breathlessness.I have been changed to a calcium channel blocker and flecanide. I can now walk properly but am still breathless quite often. My ankles are rather more swollen but the AFA leaflet warned that this could be a problem with calcium channel blockers. My ablation is booked for August.

Welcome but sorry you have to be here at such a young age.

When I was diagnosed I too was given a choice - meds or ablation. I opted for ablation and am free of AF at the moment. I am off meds except warfarin.

I am aware it may come back but if it does I will do it again. When it works it is fantastic so I would support your decision. Good luck and stay positive.

Can I ask, nobody has mentioned blood thinners to me and you all appear to be on one. Anyone have any idea why it's not been discussed with me? I'm guessing it's my age and the risk factors are low enough that it's not needed?.

Hi Maria - A big welcome from me too. As others have said, you will find this is a great site to discuss everything relating to AF with forum members who totally understand the condition.

Welcome Maria. Anticoagulants as you say maybe because you have a low risk, or soon after pregnancy. Either way if it was me I would ask next time I see Gp or cardio. I think you may have to be on them for the ablation.
