Hello BStanding56 I am on the lowest dose of 100mg of Amiodarone but was told that I can reduce this if I want to, which I won't do at the moment until I get an overall second opinion. I have been on this dose for 4 months, and prior to this 200mgs for 5 months.

Read the information leaflet that comes with tablets, it has some terrible side effects. I was on it for 6 years then started with a dry cough only when talking, lost part of my lung before they found out it was amiodarone lung toxicity. I never thought to read the leaflet after so long on the tablets it summarised a lot of my symptoms. I was on 200mgs a day - I think I read that 40% of patients on this dose suffer side effects.

I am on 200mg daily of Amiodarone. I tried to reduce the dose earlier this year down to 100mg, but my AF came back within days. If you are taking just 100mg per day I would call that a low dose.

I saw my consultant yesterday and he advised me to stay on amiodoryn 100mg as he thinks it is controlling my Af, He said when I went in the first time with Af that my heart was tired but not damaged, almost came out of there skipping lolx Thank you for my replies

Make sure that you have your eyes tested regularly when on Amiodarone. I too was on Amiodarone for over 6 years and had to stop because it was causing deposits in my corneas. The effect reverses when you stop taking Amiodarone. Make sure you have your eyes tested annually and tell your optician you are on Amiodarone. He should notice anyway because Amiodarone causes some distortion of the eye, but for safety I would suggest telling him so that he can check for any deposits. I was on 200mg (the maximum dose) but when I reduced to 100mg unfortunately my AF returned

Also remember that Amiodarone contains a LARGE amount of iodine, which is why it can upset the Thyroid gland.

You should have had a blood test including your TSH thyroid level before you were placed onto Amiodarone, and you MUST have it checked annually., while you are on it, and MUST have it checked again if and when you stop taking it.

The body takes 3-6months to clear Amiodarone so the effects of it continue ling after you stop taking it. I was on it for a few years with great success until it stopped working, and my local hospital took me of it overnight with no blood test check, 3 months later my thyroid went ballistic and took over a year to get it back to near normal. Purely because my thryoid TSH had not been regularly checked.
