I can only give my own experience.

I've had short courses of prednisolone for asthma (40mgs for 5 or 6 days usually, once for 3 weeks), a steroid inhaler for asthma (Symbicort 400/12, 2 puffs twice a day). I've had asthma for 40+ years. Since July 2013 I've also taken prednisolone daily to relieve polymyalgia, originally on 20mgs a day, now on 10mgs a day.

My paroxysmal AF is largely controlled by flecainide (150mgs x 2 daily).

I have not noticed any worsening of AF or any other effects on AF by steroids.

Thank you very much for this reply. i too have polymyalgia, ot RA, not sure which, yet. I have made a note about the flecainide to speak with the consultant. One bad side effect of steroids for me (especially being a woman) ha, is they quickly put weight on me a a round face!!!!!!!

I have been on a steroid inhaler for years and occasionally need extra steroid tablets when things get tough with the lungs. It doesn't seem to affect the AF. I do only have them in short bursts.

Only once have I had an AF episode after being on steroid tablets and that could have been a coincidence.

I wish you well and hope yours do the job for you.

I just had a recent course of 2 weeks of steroids following asthma problems. My AF went completely. I spoke to the cardiologist about it and he explained it can help reduce the inflammation in the atria tissue which can cause AF.
