Hi,

There are two ways of measuring stoke risk, CHADS2 and CHA2DS2VASC. The latter is more accurate. With a score of 3 it means you have a high risk of stroke corresponding to an annual risk of 3.2%. So you could expect a stroke very roughly once every 30 years if you do not take anti-coagulation.

It means you definitely need to be on anticoagulants like warfarin.

You can confirm your score here:

Hi Mark,At the moment I am feeling as if on a roller coaster of fear. Like many others I have read about on this site, not so much the fear of death but the insurmountable fear of having a stroke and having to depend on other people. Until I get onto an anticoagulant I shall keep on munching on Garlic downed by copious glasses of pomegranate juice.C

Caromia, I see this post is 4 yrs old but I am wondering if you are currently taking anti coagulants or no...? I am curious as I refuse to take anti coagulants ?

Hi Caromia,

You should be able to get straight onto warfarin. You obviously have the data which you can present to your GP and demand immediate action! The GP shouldn't need any more than the report you have already. I'm very frustrated (and I'm sure you even more so!) at the slowness of some GPs to get going on anticoagulants.

mmmm - I'm a bit dubious about the scoring at qxmd.com/calculate-online/c....

It says "CHA2DS2-VASc Score is 0 which corresponds to a low risk of stroke in atrial fibrillation. Yearly risk of stroke without warfarin treatment is estimated at 0%" which means that I have less chance of stroke than the average person without AF - yay! I know my risk is low but 0% sounds too low.

Good point, Elmbury. The risk is obviously not 0. This article:

pccj.eu/index.php?option=co...

indicates that it's 0.84% with CHA2DS2-VASC = 0, which makes more sense.
