According to NHS inform, healthy cholesterol levels are:

Total cholesterol: Should be below 5 mmol/L Yours 5.9

HDL (good cholesterol): Above 1.0 mmol/L for men and above 1.2 mmol/L for women - Yours 1.06

Non-HDL (bad cholesterol): Below 4 mmol/L Yours 4.84

Cholesterol levels can increase with age, and women tend to have higher HDL levels than men. High cholesterol levels can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Lifestyle changes and medication can help lower cholesterol levels. These changes include:

Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains

Limiting processed foods, salt, saturated fats, and trans fats

Regular exercise

Avoiding excessive alcohol intake

Quitting smoking

You are only just above acceptance so please do NOT stress. Take on board guidance on reducing the so called bad cholesterol and see how you go. 👍

I would say the trend is more important than the level; the latter seems OK for you. However, having other relevant comorbidities may mean you require a conversation with a trusted medic.

I have had total cholesterol around 7.0 for 20+ years declined statins 20 years ago. No known problems so far 😁.

I wouldn’t want statins either , that’s given me hope, I went into a panic , I’ve been a stone ish over weight, I know I been comfort eating from mother passing last nov, I’ve lost half a stone in 8 days from having no bread , fat and sugar, am I having too much fruit, I don’t know , how do you keep at a stable weight, surely you keep loosing ? I don’t want be a skeleton but keep to 9 stone just half to go , guess I’ll ask these questions end of nov when have blood test see if below 5 , thank you again

I chose not to take statins. I had Chokesterol of 5.6 and decided to try and reduce it myself. I just cut out butter, reduced cheese intake ( I used to eat it every day ) and ate a Benecol yoghurt most days, then after a few weeks having about 2 or 3 a week. After three months, my cholesterol was down to 4.5

I also began checking the saturated fat content of food and I do try to avoid items with high saturated fat, although I don’t tend to eat ready made food anyway and I don’t have a sweet tooth. A woman should have no more than 20mgs of saturated fat daily, a man 30 mgs.

Well done to you!! This gives me hope. Just found out mine is 6.2 which is a shock as never knew I had high cholesterol.

No one can be sure what it means but yours are just over the current guidelines, it seems. The reality is that recent studies, none of them exactly confirmatory so still not certain, point to the reality that the lower these levels, the longer we seem, on average, to survive without cardiovascular diseases (such as high blood pressure, diabetes, strokes and heart failure).

I take my daily statin in the hope that the science is right!

it’s a confusing subject as my GP says my cholesterol is high at hdl 2.11 and LDL 3.6 and wants me to take statins.

Had cholesterol checks done over the years and every time i rang for results they were getting higher, then one day on appointment with gp she told me my cholesterol was never as high as i had been told, also consultant told me my cholesterol was reasonable, i declined statins and started taking plant sterols and on follow up blood test my cholesterol had dropped,, 2400 mg to lower cholesterol, 800-1200mg to maintain.

That is baffling , so do you have a few drinks now and again or stopped completely and can you have any treats now and again, ? Seems strict no drinks no cakes lol

I don't have any drinks at all , last alcoholic drink I had was September 2023... my diet is not the best because unfortunately I do not like a lot of foods but I have never eaten a lot of cakes ,biscuits pies etc ... my downfall fall is my diet but iv started eating seeded bread and some fruit most days... I have a small takeaway pizza once a week.. I even swapped my butter to the plant sterol one and that made no difference either, I think I'm.just doomed
