the hammer and I have walked that trail on the right that goes down into the rock walls and driven up that road on the left ( of the center / camping ) and had a ranger show us some interesting stuff up there. We were there many times in the 4X4 truck and dolphin mini rv.

Some very beautiful countryside but its close proximity to the highway - busy night time traffic made it kinda scary after sunset. lol. exotic as heck , waking up there mornings. The vistas , ambiance of heating rocks and fragrances from Creosol and sage … boisterous birds. A great , fun, nature experience brother.

One of the best trips down your way.

I've driven by there a bunch of times, on my way to Lone Pine to do Whitney, summitted it in 2014 and 2017. During one of the trips I saw vans with writing on the side that had #s and names, then I found out that people were doing Badwater ultramarathon and they were the support vans for them.

135 miles from Death Valley to Whitney Portal. On my way up to the Portal I saw two guys walking up there, I parked and waiting for them to finish and applauded them. That is badassery right there

Yes that unexpected ( when you are there the first time ) little store , patio restaurant etc. are a delight …. Literally in the middle of no where rotflol. I’ve fished in the little , well stocked , trout pond and had a beverage and snack there too. That gigantic frozen water fall over on the left side is astonishing and beautiful. There hammer freaks/d every time we drove back down , being on the side of the vehicle facing the guardrail/less breathtaking sheer drops . Rotflol. I’ve walked up the portal several times but never to the summit. Another treasure in nature’s treasure chest. We started visiting that portal yearly back in the 1980s , …. On one trip we saw an enormous mountain lion sunning on a rock. It was so large , it looked to have escaped a zoo or something. It was on top of a rock in movie flats on your way up. I think the mountain scenes of Gunga Din were filmed there among many others. It’s drop dead gorgeous, it’s no wonder why the studios used that location so much.

You know how to pick ‘em buddy. Those locations truely beautiful “ California’s Gold “ ( ala Huell Howser “ ) .

Back in those days we had a little 22’ Dolphin motor home and went out from Friday night till Sunday night every weekend from early March until nearly Thanksgiving. Me , the hammer and our two daughters. Mostly S.F and every nook and cranny on the central coast, but plenty of Yosemite…. The ridge back highway to Owen’s Valley. Many favorites on 395, especially the Whitney run and those highly active volcanic fumeroles next to / near the thermal plant area opposite the Mammoth turn off. I probably could write a small book on places off the 395. Including the many vast government munitions and testing locations ( Hawthorne, yearington , others I won’t mention. The hammer owns a piece of the defunct Lucky Boy mine located in Lucky Boy pass overlooking the Hawthorne munitions storage and testing locations. I could go on and on , rotflol. The entire of Owen’s valley is a treasure or jumping off point to many treasures.

Awesome memories that you made Bruddah Kal, so wonderful to spend all that time with the fam outdoorsing😁. I'd go with my Dad to Beach Camps with other Dads and kiddos. They'd drink Primo beers and play poker and us kids would do whatever

That guardrail and the cliff off there is scary, I would stay away from it as I drove up as it was so early that there were no cars coming down, such gorgeous nature up there

I've never been up to Bishop or stopped at Manzanar internment camp near Lone Pine. The farthest up the 395 that I stayed at was in Independence

Did the Death Valley marathon in 2003 and took two of the kids to Scotty's Castle afterwards. Think we were 200 feet below sea level, I didn't notice any extra 02😁 during the run

the girls got older and discovered their social life and their camping fun was over .the hammer had a job , eventually , where she drove the northern state daily and wasn’t interested in driving more on the weekends as well. They started spending summers at the hammers parents house in Texas every year , leaving me alone all summer to entertain myself. Times change, people change …. Good memories never the less. All part of the rich texture of life. Rotflol

guess the only camping I have left is going to be resort hotels Rotflol …. That have wheelchair access. Lotsa great memories tho. Yea there is a batch of great weather days coming our ways …. Those should lend themselves to some fine outdoors QOL …. eh ? Been having a lil bit of trouble with not feeling my perky best , but I think if I get myself up and get on out there, I won’t notice the small change so much.
