Decades ago I had chronic stress fractures of both tibia, I did some research, and concluded I needed Vitamin D. Since then there have been no futher problems.

Things I learned: The RDA is bogus. Around a hundred years ago they took a group of young white men. They fed them diets with gradually reduced amounts of the test vitamin until they showed signs of deficiency. Since they didn't know Vit D is a hormone, they didn't control for sun exposure, so the results were meaningless. Most of us living outside the tropics need supplementation during less sunny months.

One Brit. study looked at Vit D blood levels in women with hip fractures. They found levels were 2% of normal to nil.

"They" use hip fracture as an index for other medical procedures. It's a constant in most western countries. The exception is Hawaii where the rate is around half of elsewhere. They didn't look at Vit D levels. I've drawn my own conclusion.

Excellent reference. Thanks for posting it.

I routinely take 10,000 IU of Vit-D daily, and I have always had a high bone mineral density.
