My husband (David) is beginning to lose some of his hair from Chemo treatment do all patients lose their hair on docetaxel (taxotere). It is falling out in a lot of strains when he showers. Do all patients on this chemo lose all their hair or does it just get thinner. He has had no other bad side effects to his chemo. Thank Goodness

Hi, My Husband had Docetaxel over 5 years ago. He chose to wear a cool cap, and didn't loose any hair on his head. But his moustache/eyebrows and all other bodily hair fell out. It did grow back after treatment had finished.

I think if your Hubbie has already started the chemo it would be too late to ask for a cool cap now? . He also had toe nails that started to loosen, but never actually came off.

I wish your Husband every success with the chemo, It brought my Husbands PSA down from 320 to 1.5 for about a year before it started to climb.

It always happens unless the patient uses an ice cap during the infusion. It grows back.

You have replied to my post previously and seem to have a lot of great info. Would you mind going to my post I made today and see what you think? Thanks in advance.

I did not wear any cap and I have not lost a single hair on my head. But after the third I have lost my beard! And now after 6 I am losing a couple of fingernails. I would have preferred to lose my hair! But anyway, it’s all reversible, just have some patience 😃

It can be different for each man as I know of some who never lost a hair whereas my husband started losing his hair after the first infusion of Docetaxel. He bought a shaver and I shaved his head. It was easier doing it all at once than having hair all over his pillow and falling out during the day. When his hair grew back it came in white, curly and thicker so don’t be surprised if that happens to your hubby too.

By the way, my husband wore a cool cap and that did not work. He also iced his hands and feet (also chewed ice during treatment) and that DID help. I hope your husband tolerates the treatment well and more importantly that it helps keep his cancer at bay like it did for my husband.

I started losing hair in patches on my head after the second chemo treatment. I did not completely shave my head, but I did cut it fairly short. I also had problems with my toenails and eyebrows. Here I am a year later and my hair , although thinner has completely grown back. My toenails have almost recovered. My eyebrows have been a little bit more stubborn. My wife got me some beauty product that is helping my eyebrows come back in. My biggest problem from the chemo was the neuropathy in my feet.

What is the name of the beauty product?

Thank you

It is called ukbrow Eyebrow serum. I did not completely lose my eyebrows. I lost the outer half on each side. I have put putting on this serum day and night for quite a while. I have had a lot of hair grow back, even though they are not nearly as thick.

There are quite a few products on the market for growing eyebrow hair. I have heard the castor oil works too.

Sorry to hear about the neuropathy in your feet. Did you notice it during chemo, just wondering as my husband very now and than has the slightest weird feeling and than it seems to go away, he has 1 more infusion left. Goos luck to you

I started noticing the neuropathy around the second infusion of doxetal. I did not have pain in my feet, but they became severely numb. I lost nearly all of my toenails. I did not lose any of my fingernails. As I got to my seventh or eighth infusion, I started having acupuncture done to my feet. I was kind of a skeptic starting, but it actually helped me quite a bit. I was able to use a Chinese star tool every night at my home. My wife would do this for me, I also invested in a pneumatic massage tool. That has also done wonders. I went from my feet being probably 95% numb to probably less than 10% now.

I lost my hair twice on two different chemo agents. When it got scraggly my hair stylist just shaved it off. Chemo patients past and present recognize you and all share “bald is beautiful “. Invest in a nice hat to protect you from sun and cold. Both times mine grew back very well. I also lost all 20 nails on Docetaxol.

My husband knew to expect that and chose to shave his head as soon as his hair started falling out. When it grew back it came in curly; before chemo he had straight hair. Then after a few more months it grew in straight again. It does take time though

Ha, so interesting! My husband's hair also came in thick and curly - I wonder if his will get straight again too?

in reply toHikerWife

I think it will but with natural growth time 🤞🏽

when that started happening to me I just shaved my head and bought some hats. It ended up growing back better than ever on my head but never came back on my chest and legs. With chemo you just gotta embrace the suck and grind through it.

Shave it, shave it, shave it. He'll look better being uniformly near-bald than with having patches.
