I am on Lupron and Abi two months now with <.1 PSA down from 2.2, MO says I can do abi w food if I want, so is it an okay idea to go with 500 or 250mg per day vs 1000, and if so, how many grams of fat constitute the low fat breakfast to eat with the abi? 🙂

Now that abi is available as a low cost generic, there is no benefit in taking it with food. All food does is increase the bioavailability (the amount of abi that is absorbed into your body) of the lower dose. The side effects are exactly the same if the bioavailability is the same. The problem with food is that the bioavailability can vary a lot from patient to patient and depending on what the food is and your microbiome. It is more dependable to take it without food.

Here's a source for low cost generic abi -$124/mo:

After two years on ABI, at full dose, I asked my MO the same question. Her reply was "You're doing great, leave well enough alone." I'm now at 4.5 years on ABI, remain undetectable. I'm following the "well enough alone" advice.

Best of luck, Marshall.

Sorry, what does "leave well enough alone" mean ?

It means don't change anything, you might make things worse.

My personal experience with abiraterone is that 1000mg fasting produced lots of nausea. I actually vomited once. 250mg with a meal of about 300 calories and 7-8 grams fat produces only slight nausea. After one month on the new regimen my PSA was still undetectable. I'm due for follow-up labs in 10 days. Cost isn't much of an issue though I always am glad to save the money but QOL matters.

Yes if I get SE beyond the hot flashes I might consider it too. Thanks for the meal parameters.

I take the low dose Abi with breakfast. If you google Rutgers Institute of Cancer/ low dose abiraterone you can print a page of acceptable foods. I have been on low dose since I started Abi and have had great results. This works well for me because my normal breakfast works perfectly however a guy who is use to eating bacon and eggs for breakfast is gonna have to make changes. Now I know that Abi is available for about $140 to the door for 120 tablets but if I can make that bottle last 120 days instead of 30 I save about $105 a month. That may not sound like much to most but to me is amounts to $1260 per year and that’s not pocket change.

Good to hear about successes with food and low dose - I assume you mean 250mg of abi; how long have you been on it?
