The benefit of time-tested options

I saw this and thought I'd risk sharing it:

We all are interested in finding ways to deal with this beast and are tempted to grasp at any option that sounds like it might help, or seems effective in the short run. I would want all of us to have the best shot at longevity with QOL possible. May you make wise choices. 😘

Super thanks Tinuriel! The article is great, especially on the world we live in where the "hot tip" (as we used to say), or the new health supplement, etc., are everywhere!(There's a back story here on the death of the editor - along with the death of mainstream media. Now we have to be our own editors and we're not often very good at that.)

As for our reason for being here, PCa, one thing I have settled on, in part because of a huge amount of research, is that exercise is probably really good for any kind of cancer but especially hormone-driven cancers like PCa.

But I wrestled with the whole supplements and diet thing. On one hand as Tall_Allen likes to point out, almost none of such things are supported by clinical studies. On the other hand there's no profit motive for clinical tests fir a lot of low-cost supplements. We might be overlooking something valuable!

I am guilty of during the late '80s and '90s of believing some of the hype about antioxidants. And I took vitamin E and a few other things. And it turns out I may even have contributed to the development of prostate cancer. Or maybe not.

I like Nassim Taleb's encouragement to know if someone has any skin in the game. If someone writing something has no skin in the game then maybe they're doing it for entertainment or because they are paid to entertain. And thus there is no alignment between their goals and my goals.

You hope that we all make wise decisions. Your contribution today is great. Because it suggests a pathway between two dark and simplistic alternatives: (1) ignore everything except what one's doctor says or (2) incredible acceptance of everything else including snake oil. There is a middle way.

Good judgment is hard work, and there's an opportunity cost even for that too. We don't have all day for research. That's one reason this community is helpful too.

The Old normal:

We should listen to people who’ve lived more life than us. Our grandparents, our elders—they’ve seen a lot and they have wisdom that’s stood up over time. We should study the lives of people we admire and ask them questions. Look for wisdom that has stood the test of time for multiple generations.

The New normal:

Crickets chirping.
