lodging near mdanderson?

last time we went down, we flew into bush airport, rented a car and stayed in the wrong area for the clinic..this time I'm trying to get it right. Flying into hobby, looking for a hotel with at least frig and microwave that has shuttle to both airport and the clinic. It seems like it's either one of the other, never both.

I'm really not wanting to spend $200 a night because this might become a long drawn out process and I've got to save cash wherever I can. Anybody familiar with this area that can clue me in?

thanks, Denise

i rented a car or used uber. hobby airport is closer than bush.

Spring15-3 profile image
Spring15-3 in reply to aesteve

We rented a car last time, since it's just 3 days I was hoping to avoid that. I'm not used to hotels not having airport shuttles

in reply to Spring15-3

Uber from airport

Spring15-3 profile image
Spring15-3 in reply to

Never messed with them but I did discover mdanderson has a car that will pick outsole up from either airport and take them to hotel. Kind of high in thinking at $60 from hobby but...

in reply to Spring15-3

Uber is the way to go now!!

Did an Uber search for you.

Hobby to MDAnderson $32 to $40

My friend and her husband stayed at THE ROTARYHOTEL run y Marriott and designated for MDA patients and family. THEY HAVE SHUTTLES FROM THE AIRPORT AND TO MDA. Here’s the info…..

Rotary House Hotel

Crazy ass expensive though

TJGuy profile image
TJGuy in reply to Spring15-3

Parking at M D Anderson is expensive was $12.50 to park probably more now, adds up.

Spring15-3 profile image
Spring15-3 in reply to TJGuy

I don't mind taking the free shuttle to the clinic and parking is free at hotel but since these shuttles only go to clinic, that would leave me finding a ride from and to airport plus a way to get some groceries.

TJGuy profile image
TJGuy in reply to Spring15-3

My sister and I when I flew in to visit, took the shuttle to various restaurants, she took it to go food shopping, clothes shopping at stores down near the sports stadiums. We took it all the way north to the Rice University area where there a a bunch of restaurants. Just tip the van driver.

Spring15-3 profile image
Spring15-3 in reply to TJGuy

Really? One of the comments on the hotel website said the shuttle only went to the clinic

Spring15-3 profile image
Spring15-3 in reply to Tucaz1

thanks folks. With the uber/clinic cars prices being what they are, a rental car is $30 more and I discovered that the shuttles the hotels have only go to hospital so getting to grocer store becomes difficult. I guess I'm renting a car. I've never been in a town that didn't have airport shuttles before.

Parking expensive at MD Anderson $12.50 I believe when I was there.Never liked the Houston area, I ended up later at Mayo Rochester MN which is very comfortable, parking easy and cheap on the street right near hospital, parking garage as well.

Hotels usually offer a MAYO rate. You might find that in Houston for MD Anderson as well.

Spring15-3 profile image
Spring15-3 in reply to TJGuy

We looked at mayo but Dr Corn came so highly recommended that we opted to try him first and he is the only doc we've talked to that understands "zebras" and talks about things we can do instead of just throwing his hands in the air and saying this is what you must do

I stayed in an Airbnb very close to the hospital and used Uber. You can also contact the hospital direct for housing suggestions

For my treatment at UCLA, I drove from Georgia to LA so I would have a car for the 7 weeks I was there. Do you live too far away to take a day or two to drive? Save airfare and rental car.

Also, through UCLA, I found a non profit that provided a place to stay at no charge. Call the office of your Dr at MD Anderson and ask to speak to a social worker. They are the ones who can refer you to any organizations that may provide similar housing in Houston.

Spring15-3 profile image
Spring15-3 in reply to LongevityAT

I have enough points that flights are free and if we need to be there long term Anderson has those options also but we are only there for 3 days this time and the non profit places are for 30+ days. Even driving there NC to TX, we would rent a car. Both our vehicles are 20+ yrs old with over 200000 miles on them. They're great vehicles but I wouldn't trust them that far :)

Hope UCLA worked out well for you!!

Hope you are able to find the most economical way to be there for treatment. Never fun being away from home in these situations. Best of luck!

From much experience, Jesse H Jones Rotary House Hotel. It's physically attached to the hospital complex by a series of climate-controlled breezeways so no matter what the weather you never have to get out in it. The rooms are nice and very clean. Call them for rates but I've always been very happy staying there.

Best of luck!

Ok , Rotary House is the Marriott on campus, you are connected to most of the hospital, they even do your lab work in an area behind the check in. Rooms are for family and friends and discounted, great restaurant on second floor and many others to choose from..I have a private car pick me up and it is 50 bucks. Usually a new large SUV. I have their number if you are interested. So much less stress knowing you are right there. Great lobby with something usually going on for the patients....

OK, I'm just being nosy but I've read your post and I'm committed to finding you a good place. Where did you go? I'm guessing Jesse H. Jones Rotary House International.

We have comfort suites since they have shuttle, breakfast and frig and microwave. That means we don't have to go out to eat, grocery store in walking distance. I'm all about saving every possible penny since we don't know where this will go

We went every 3 weeks for 18 months. Stayed most times at Mainstay suites on Old Spanish Trail. They have medical and/or senior discounts. Rooms around $75. Have kitchenette, small LR, nice beds and bath/shower. Definitely have shuttle to hospital. Not sure about airport. But MUCH less expensive than Rotary House.

I just talked to them. Before you go back, I was just told the medical shuttle only runs 3 pm to 7 pm...unbelievable

TJGuy profile image

I believe my sister stayed at mainstay suites on d Spanish trail there for several months. It's about 3 miles if I remember correctly, she walked to hospital most of the time. Everyone thought she was crazy, no one walks in Houston. Shuttle to hospitals, shuttle to rice University food area, will also take you to local restaurants, food stores, shopping. Free breakfast. Just tip the driver. There was a very good cafeteria nearby van will take you there as well.

I stayed at Marriott 4 points, older Marriott microwaves in hallways, had mini fridge brought to room. Then stayed at rotary house directly attached to hospital for actual surgery. Small microwaves 700 watts cost about $35 if you want to buy one in Houston.

I stayed at Hilton Houston Plaza/Medical Center - took Uber from airport. They have MDA shuttles to anywhere you need to go to.

I've been coming to Houston since 2018. Try the Rotary House Hotel right on campus. If too expensive, try the Hotel Ylem. If not, too your liking there are many other short or long term stay options that MD Anderson can provide to you.

All the best in your fight and journey!

We stayed at the Rotary House during our last visit. It may not click all of your boxes but it was a good and convenient option.

try to fly into Hobby Airport. There are several hotels around the MDA campus (3-5 mile radius) Rotary House is very convenient but maybe pricey. If your stay ends up extended there are short term lease furnished apartments on Fannin and the Holcomb area. The social workers at MDA can probably assist you with your stay too.

Be careful with hotels on 610 Loop east of 288 and west of S Main. Those areas have a high crime rate.

Spring15-3 profile image
Spring15-3 in reply to Linebacker75

Rotary is definitely pricey. I'm going that 1055 mcnee Rd doesn't fall in that area?

MD Anderson in The Woodlands. Might not be an option but The Woodlands, TX has an MD Anderson facility about 25 minutes from Busch airport. This year I got all of my treatments at that facility, MRI, PET scans, urology, colonoscopy, ADT, radiation, etc. There might be more options and in that area and you don't have to deal with downtown Houston. Of course that would only work if you can get treatments moved to the Woodlands facility. Throughout my entire cancer journey I have not had to goto downtown Houston at all. There are many hotels in the Woodlands / Conroe area.

Spring15-3 profile image
Spring15-3 in reply to markprince

Thank you, I'm not sure how that works. We we are going to Houston for a specific doc...do they split their time between the two?

Pops78 profile image
Pops78 in reply to markprince

So where is your doctor located then since you have never gone downtown to med center?? Would be very interested in that since we have a daughter who lives very close to the Woodlands.

Spring15-3 profile image
Spring15-3 in reply to Pops78

Dr Corn whom I believe is part of the Houston clinics? We've only been once so not really familiar with how things work

markprince profile image
markprince in reply to Pops78

There are several MO and RO doctors at the Woodlands facility. Some split their time between Houston and Woodlands but a few are there every day. My RO is Dr. Marc Delclose. His father was an RO at MD Anderson for 42 years. So in short, my RO and urologist are both in the Woodlands facility full time. I have met patients that are on triplet therapy that go to Houston about once per month (not sure about specifics) but all of their treatments are at the Woodlands facility. Its a very nice area and the facility is beautiful and its about a half mile off I-45. I was lucky that I live 20 minutes away but I became friends with another PCA patient who lives in Florida but his daughter lives in Spring which is a 10 minute drive to the facility so he is staying with her. I have personal policy: I don't go inside Beltway 8 unless I know someone sick at one of the downtown medical centers:) The place is first class and I have never waited more than 10 minutes for any kind of appt or procedure.

Rotary House Marriot is connected to MD Anderson with an elevated walkway. I believe they have subsidized rates. Lots of motels off loop 610 and 57.

We usually stay at the Hampton Inn on Old Spanish Trail in the med center, 713-797-0040. Has a small fridge, microwave and free breakfast, a shuttle for the hospitals, not sure about air ports as we're close enough to drive. There is a Luby's Cafeteria right next door (same parking lot) actually. Parking is, or was, $8 a night unless you have a handicap sticker, then it's free if a spot is available. There is a grocery store not far away, but too far to walk. MDA has it's own shuttle's but only for getting from one of it's facilities to another same day, not hotels. Hope Lodge Program is free if referred by your physician ahead of time and having treatments, and if they have availability. Phone # 713-848-8905 for info. Rotary House is just across the street from M.D.A., 713-790-1600 for info. Best of luck.
