I was watching a documentary about the universe a few weeks back. The planets size and what they're made of dictates where they are located in the solar system. For life on earth, as we know it to allow us to be alive - the odds are actually incredibly small. We have to be exactly where we are from the sun and exactly how the earth has evolved to create the conditions suitable for us. So much so, that some scientists actually started to believe in some higher power as opposed to randomness and their associated probabilities.

Now if you think about the event of you actually being conceived, you competed against around 100 million sperm - PER MILLILITER, at the right time of the month. Also, your whole family tree had to endure the same odds per parent for generations against plagues, natural disasters, wars and all kinds of events - all of which happened for you to exist.

With all that in mind (and a lot more) it's truly remarkable that each and everyone of us actually had a shot at life in the first place. Its an incredible infinitesimally low number.

So next time when you think about how unlucky you are to have prostate cancer, the truth is more like how lucky you have been to be born in the first place. Relatively speaking, the two events aren't even comparable.

You should be appreciative, not depressed.
