I’m new to a Foley catheter.

When in the hospital it was dripping continuously, no problems. Note that I’m home and off the IV and now constipated and I haven’t seen much urine. I irrigated it and it goes in well but it doesn’t drain well when I move the syringe back out. I get some back in the syringe but not as much as what I’ve put it.

i had clots in my urine while in the hospital, almost burst my bladder, but was able to clear them and I haven’t seen any since.

comments? I’m only 2 days with the bag.

I am not quite sure why you have a foley but after my prostatectomy i had one for 10 days and the flow in was continuous. If yours is not producing and you have a blockage that sounds serious.

I just drank 3 glasses of water, took a laxative and I see some urine starting to flow into the tubing.

My cancer spread into the bladder wall and was causing clots, which led to blockage. Awful experience!

I am sorry that was your experience. Please help us understand by explaining in more detail where the pain was and what it felt like. Also, how many clots did you expel and what did they look like? Thanks

At first it was hematuria coming and going. Then a 1/4” to 1” clot occasionally. Over last holiday weekend stopped peeing altogether. Went to ER and the installed catheter. Drained a little over a liter, they irrigated the bladder and flushed clots, looked like any bloody nose clot, and held me overnight to keep irrigating until they were gone.

Had bone scan today, pet/ct on Monday and then will update treatment plan.

30cc per hour is about normal. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of liquids

hello Saville, about 3 years following my prostate bed radiation the hematuria started for me. It came on light but over a few months got bad enough to totally block my urethra and my bladder ballooned up like a puffer fish. It was very painful requiring a tri cath insertion and overnight flush to clear. During the flush the first clots came out about the diameter of a #2 pencil lead then reduced to coffee ground consistency. I’ve been to the er for this 4 times since and have figured out anytime I hold my urine back, push or hold a bowel movement or just strain that area my bladder will crack up and bleed. Now I make a point to drink lots of liquids, take laxative daily and carry a wide mouth plastic bottle in my truck at all times.

I’m on the dreaded Lupron so don’t read into the “wide mouth” part too much, it just easier to hit while driving down the road 😜

Good luck and stay in the fight brother.

I have almost identical issue as you had. The constipation is Hell. I worry I’m not getting as much urine out as I should and it’s backing up somewhere. I have a pet/ct scan on Monday and I’m sure they will comment on that.

Right now I’m pushing water and irrigating several times daily.

Thank you for your message.

I'm very sorry for your struggle. I can't offer any advice on urination, but I was plagued with constipation; tried all the over-the-counter stuff, and nothing was effective. Finally, one of my docs prescribed "Lactulose Solution USP". It helped me, and I hope it helps you.

I’m sorry that you re caught in this . What a joy! Ehh! Been there ,done that . It will be a great day , once you shed this . The concern is you kidney funtion.. I had pc tumors blocking my urethra and bladder causing k failure resulting in a foley and tubes out of the back for over a year . The imrt and double adt washed those tumors away in time . Thank God . I hope that you too escape the plastics very soon . One main issue I had during that time was the dreaded UTI’s . Like clock work after I replaced the tubes tri monthly and the foley i got uti’s 3 days later . So I used cipro and the rest of those bad antis the entire time. That helped destroy my joints after already having djd inherited . I know it sounds counterintuitive but drink lots of spring water . Avoid n-said s I was told .. Hang in there Sir! You’ll get over this mess . Scott .

Happy Sunday sir. I had the Foley for 7 days, plenty of small clots. The constipation was the worst! In recovery, hospital, 2 nites. Dr said resume normal diet, worst advice ever. My internals were still asleep from anesthesia. Took 3 day to clear, and I screamed when it passed. Urologist says its common for the stool to pass by the sensitive area and press against the Foley. Water and Ensure diet for a few days would have been a better suggestion. IMO.

Peace.

Hello Seville,

Which were some of the symptoms except the bleeding before finding out it spread in the bladder?

I had a tumor develop that blocked my kidneys and created clots in my bladder. I went through about a month of difficulty peeing before figuring out what was going on. My psa and other blood work remained normal. Eventually had to have neph bags put in. It took me over a week to clear the blood from my urine. Very difficult time but I’m almost at the end of that experience as we have shrunk the tumor with chemo and radiation.

I’m so glad you are feeling much better, and that the tumor has shrunk.. My father has been in catheter since day one since he is totally against TURP, but recently has seen blood in urine and clots for a week now. He can have normal urine for 24 hours and the next day might see clots or blood .. We went twice to the doctor’s office and change the catheter but it seems the doctor doesn’t seem concerned . Are you in any type of ADT medications ?

yes. Xtandi and Lupron

Saville what is the plan now after shrinking it ? Are you going to surgically remove it ?

in reply tonaples2021

I’ll let you know next week. 👍🏼

in reply to

It’s basically scar tissue and no way to remove it without invasive surgery
