Ruptured bicep tendon

Has anyone else had a bicep tendon rupture? What if anything was done about it? Since it doesn't hurt, my husband doesn't believe it happened. The home health care nurse identified and reported it to the doctor in charge, but nothing has happened. I think it happened some time when my husband was trying to pull himself higher in bed by reaching over his head and grabbing the headboard. He is finally doing better now 6 weeks after getting home. Suddenly I found him in the kitchen sneaking ice cream from the refrigerator last week. This week he is forgetting to use the walker around the house.

My wife had that happen recently. We learned it’s not a very critical muscle to daily function. She still golfs and is a 12 handicap.

Proximal ruptures may be treated medically, distant ruptures require surgical treatment.

Years ago I tore my right bicep muscle & the torn part moved down to the inner elbow & eventually dissolved there. My right bicep muscle these days is noticeably smaller.

During ADT, tore my labrum at the insertion point of the long biceps tendon along with a 3mm partial tear of the supraspinatus. I've rehabbed it, and have about 95% of function now, very lucky it wasn't worse.

‘Forgetting to use the walker’ sounds like a bigger concern. If he’s using a walker he is presumably a high fracture risk. For ice cream I can understand but still…

That ice cream will get you every time. Chocolate ice cream gets me every time. Can't say no. Good life, good humor and live life to the fullest.

I'm an ice cream addict. Like all addictions, I'm careful not to overdo it. At least with the chocolate chip lol..

Walker was introduced at the rehab facility to get him out of bed to the bathroom because the diarrhea was causing too much work for the staff. He was so weak from dehydration that caused the initial fall in the home bathroom. No bones broken. DEXA scan shows only the right forearm at increased risk of fracture. Today he asked for tuna salad for lunch, ate a little bit and left. Next thing I know, he's raided the fridge for a cup of fruit cocktail, followed by ice cream. Absolutely no self control even when he knows too much sugar gives him spastic hands. I could be sure he was getting a balanced diet when he was confined to the master suite. Not any more. Soooo frustrating.

Wow, rabid for the forbidden fruit, literally! Be good to yourself though, you can only do so much.

Yes. A couple years into ADT, I tore the distal end of the left bicep tendon (near the elbow). It didn't tear all the way through and was a ragged tear, so the surgeon said in order to repair it, he would have to shorten the tendon and my arm could never be straightened all the way. I opted for 15% capacity and had just about forgotten about it until just now. Obviously not a huge impact on my life.

I think it can only be repaired surgically; and that must be done right away. I have one also, and it's fine; just a little bump inside my arm near my elbow.

Had them in both arms. Doctor said you had to be an Olympic athlete to be worth the operation. I’ve had no problem for 15 years.

FDA In Brief: FDA warns that fluoroquinolone antibiotics …

fda.gov/news-events/fda-bri......

Dec 20, 2019 · Fluoroquinolones appear to increase the risk of aortic aneurysm and dissection by approximately twice the usual risk, although the risk is low.

This I can tell you. Five men in a room meeting about prostate cancers, sharing info. Of the five, two of us had been diagnosed with joint, ligament or tendon damage. One had an aortic aneurysm after fluoroquinolones were prescribed. He hadn't heard of that before. I had old injuries to both shoulders and a SI ligament in my back--which tore again by my just getting out of bed. My doctor combined oral Cipro, two 500 mg pills a day, two the day before, day of and day after a procedure as well as what the nurse told me was "a humongous shot of Levaquin" which was given with the long needle--intramuscular. I was nearly crippled for years and will never be as I was. It seems that old injuries are the low hanging fruit for the fluoros. I was diagnosed by a chiropractor whose career started about the time that the fluoroquinolone drugs became popular. She has seen this happen to her patients many times over the decades.

My best to you,

In reading these accounts I thought of Cipro too and the four pages of side effects they list for it.

As I said, my doc combined 3,000 mg. of Cipro, 500 mg 2X a day, day before, day of and day after, and as the nurse said when one time I asked how much Levaquin was in the long needled intramuscular syringe, "a humongous amount". Once he prescribed a 7 day 2X a day, prescription of oral Levaquin 6 days after the above.

That is the worst, in fact you can find support groups for people that have been damaged by Cipro and related. There has got to be comparable ones out there without all the terrible long term side affects. I just don't get it, and god forbid you ask the doc for something different.

Interesting, but he was on fludrocortisone which has been stopped by the endocrinologist.

I had a bicep tendon rupture about 3 months ago. The surgeon advised a wait and see strategy. I did this by tying a shoe too tight. The shoe was a bit too wide, and I was trying to stop my foot from moving around in the shoe. It hurts sometimes when I am reaching for something.

Poor guy! That’s painful! My mom had a torn bicep at 88 yrs old . There was nothing that they could do about it . In time it got a little better . 2 scoops of chocolate chip can’t hurt! Good luck to him in quickly healing this .

Wow, I read your entire Bio. What a crazy ride you have been on. Amazing the Keytruda worked so well with no bio markers? Unreal you made it home w some of those BP numbers, and now with no walker and eating ice cream😎. You should get personalized lic plates that read Persistence. You have been a Saint w your husband. Yes, my husband had this years ago, I don't think there is anything you can really do about it but lay off. He stopped heavy benching I believe, for a year. I will ask him again to make sure I have given you the right information, GA.

I wouldn't worry about that bicep tear either. Obviously not going to affect quality of life too much.

Interesting responses on correlations between ADT and tears. This was unknown to me by not surprising as lack of T destroys most of the body and brain over a period of time. Remind me to get off this 'treatment' please.

I had a complete (i.e ripped off the bone) tear of infraspinatus and supraspinatus on my dominant shoulder about 3 months ago. I do an hour of exercise on it per day. I need surgery to correct it. I believe it would have torn with or without ADT as I did it playing sport and fell really hard on it. I guess its interesting to hypothesise if the tears would have been complete if not on ADT.

Maybe when I purse BAT it will help the shoulder heal after surgery. Oh, and 9 months rehab.

Assume it is a long head rupture. No real need to fix it other than for cosmetic reasons if the little "popeye" muscle bothers you. Short head rupture is more arguable about fixing as you do see some drop in supination (palm up motion) strength.
