Nausea med not helping my dad and it's the worst in the morning . Any suggestions to ease this symptom as it hurts him and he's very disturbed by it and it diminishes quality of life. I thought gerd from chemo ,but apparently result of chemo itself? Suggestions to ease?

I have experienced the same. Suggest zophran and a bland light breakfast. Once I got something in my stomach my nausea would pass. Hope that works. Good luck!

Unfortunately ,he's on that and takes in am ,but I'll see if he can maybe keep something like a cracker or banana next to bed and take immediately upon waking . So far zofran not stopping it. Is it from damage to the stomach or from the chemo itself ? Tysm for replying . Means a ton. Rock on soldier !

I would say its from the chemo. I was on a 3 week cycle and the first week was the toughest. He can ask his doctor for some Marinol if you are not in a marijuana state if you are get some gummies. THC helps.

Has he tried a little THC first thing in the AM?

No, he doesn't like feeling high. He tried diff strains and I think the last was an oil jack herer but a dot left him high for hours on end . He doesn't like using the vape as he didn't find it helped with energy which was what he tried it for . Are there any strains you suggest ? Tysm for replying

I use Indica at night to sleep, smoke to go right to sleep and take an edible at the same time to stay asleep. To fight nausea I use a Sativa but it does make you high. An other alternative is a super low dose THC and CBD edible. It stabilizes my mood and helps with the nausea. It doesn't make me high and I can confidently drive while taking it

Ty I'm going to screen shot the replies without overwhelming him and I think this explanation is very important . If you know of any strains that you suggest, the places close to us just don't have the medical knowledge . Even with my own conditions it was a kid in a computer flipping through , and all advised was opposite to what was explained , so in NJ we have limited oils and strains but if you knew certain names I could try to find . Our dispensaries are not clinical . The one that is is too far . Ty for taking the time to help us . My dad's heart, humility and gratitude are among his best qualities and I know he thanks you too.

Baked Brothers brand is what I use for edibles. Don't take the entire thing, start with 1/4 of a piece. If you can find the THC/CBD blend it is 2% THC and 10% CBD and that won't make him high. If you choose to smoke I would try disposable vape pen at lowest THC % available. I actually have a medical doctor that specializes in Marijuana as a health measure. He has guided me on this

You could request Marinol or Cesamet which are marihuana products approved by the FDA to treat nausea and vomit in cancer patients treated with chemo.

Daddyishealingβ€’ in reply totango65

Ty do they still make the patient high ? He doesn't want to be high . He wants more energy and overall quality of life .

tango65 profile image
tango65β€’ in reply toDaddyishealing

These meds could make a patient high. The difference with oils or the plant is that these meds are pure synthetic compounds and one can titrate the amount precisely. Perhaps he could try one of them and get to a dose which help to control the nausea without a significant high.

Daddyishealing profile image
Daddyishealingβ€’ in reply totango65

You are saying synthetic is actually easier to work with ? We only have marinol in NJ I believe . You don't find synthetics to be worse for the cancer itself ? Tysm. Very interesting input I'll look into .

These are FDA approved medicines.

The Jack Herer strain is a blend of Sativa and Indica and will indeed produce euphoria. Look for a pure indica strain which will induce calm and sleep rather than the high sativa blends are known for.

With six months of chemo alternating between Paclitaxel and Doxorubicin each week, I too suffered from nausea. The only drug that got me through was Zofran. Talk to your Medical Oncologist for a prescription.

HI gourd dancer. Happy to hear your voice again and would love to know how you are feeling . He takes xofran daily . The retching continues . I asked him to keep it next to be with cracker or banana and take as soon as his eyes open . He doesn't have any issues with it , but can't stop the retching . Did you have it worse in morning , bc he said it seems he's worst in the am ? Is there a trick of when and how to take it to avoid the most predictable morning attacks ? Healing light and love my friend ❀️

Is he taking the regular tablet or the self disintegrating tablet? The later works within 30 seconds and if he still is retching, take another one. The regular tablet should should within 30 minutes. And you can retake once.

Don’t know if you have read anything about the drug, so here is a link. mayoclinic.org/drugs-supple...

Get past the long list of of drugs. The meat of the article is after the basic warnings.

β€’ in reply toDaddyishealing

I should have asked. When does he take it? For tablet, 2 hours before chemo and again in 8 hours and repeated in another 8 hrs?

You mentioned when he wakes up. When was the last dose?

He just takes an anti nausea once a day once he is out of bed . He said it doesn't do much. Last dose yesterday ,so daily but he still gets retching and he want told to take prior to or after chemo or any directions like that which make a lot of sense .

β€’ in reply toDaddyishealing

If he waits to take during chemo, he will sense nausea for roughly an hour. Frankly the medicine is not in his system. Talk to MO as somewhere there is a disconnect. Prayers that he feels better. Dehydration can be a major problem.

Take a look at what I sent particularly the section of usage during chemotherapy. BTW, after 18 years I still carry. Really needed it five years ago in Switzerland.

I read but he's not always worst directly after chemo but fir weeks and next chemo comes a long so I don't see directions on keeping in system after the first few days. Sorry if I'm missing something. Also glad it helps you

Cannabis can have very good results for nausea and appetite. All the best going forward and God bless you and yours. 🌻

I'm touched by you all reaching out to help him . You guys give me hope when I feel helpless to make his quality of life rise. His attitude , gratitude and love of life might be his strongest tools, but sometimes we need more. He has pre-leukemia as well , so if anyone has feedback on that or experience my ears and heart are open. Truly , my friends these replies mean so much and I want to hug and high five you all for being the champions you are . For all you go through , and for the energy you use to help another man... It's where I see all of the worlds chaos disappear and true compassion and humanity prevail . πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

I might be coming from left field. I might be blind to the obvious.Nonetheless just to be sure:

Does he feel dizzy and then throws up?

Or is the nausea strictly related to his stomach and doesn't start from dizzy episode?

Daddyishealing profile image
Daddyishealingβ€’ in reply toCAMPSOUPS

Good question. He does not mention dizzy..just the retching that comes on violently

Disappointing to hear oncologist isn't working more with you on this. My late wife was given some glucocorticoid in her chemo infusions, and oral prednisone to use afterwards. Hope you find a solution.

I can't vouch for the effectiveness of this, but here's an article suggesting that peppermint oil can help with nausea.

msn.com/en-us/health/medica...

I had my own experience with violent (but unproductive) retching several days ago when I came down with the flu. It is a horrible experience.
