Patience

I have a "statistical chance" of less then30% of surviving another 4 years. I plan to beat the odds but have noticed some changes about how I tolerate people who I think are wasting my time. I have no patience for people who ignore my well deserved expert opinion on topics I have spent many years understanding. People have accused me of being just about everything including family.

I really have a lot of experience in certain aspects of electrical and electronic engineering. I have been studying this stuff since the early 70s. When someone disputes my "authority" can get really pissed off.

Do others notice less patience in "suffering fools"?

I think more than anything with a diagnosis I tend to more patient. I see and recognize the treadmills people are on, and I understand why they are on them, but those treadmills seem a little silly these days.

Treadmills are really dreadmills.

Mr spencoid, the study which came out with 30% survival at 5 years is outdated.. because it is decade old. But some how for some strange reason ..they keep repeating this outdated number. In currrent era, the true number may be at least 50% survival at 5 years.

spencoid2 profile image
spencoid2 in reply to LearnAll

that is encouraging. whatever it is i plan to beat it. i had (or have) gleason 9 and i believe the percentage is lowered a bit when that is considered?

What do you think, LearnAll of my chances? Any suggested studies?

Based on limited info in your profile, I see possibility of good prognosis. It can't be predicted unless one has very detailed information of patterns of several biomarkers, general health parameters , co-morbidities and scan patterns. No body can predict survival....we can roughly estimate it.

My partner has stage 4 prostate cancer, diagnosed 3 years ago, gone through many different treatments with little success. He has never suffered fools much before and his patience is razor thin now. I find that I am becoming the same way as my perspective has changed greatly. Some of our fellow humans pursuits can seem frivolous at best and a bloody waste of valuable time at worst. Our goal now is to stay away from fools and live life as best as possible for the remainder of the journey.

i don't really intend to be political but covidiots piss me off more than anything. i have always had a respect for the good of all. even at a 4 way stop i try to minimize the wait for everyone, not just myself. i don't understand people who have no social conscience, just me me me.

Covidiots are one of the more specific groups which annoy the living daylights out of both of us. I used to frequent some of them before Covid revealed their true vapid colours. My partner’s treatment was placed on hold this summer because our health care system was overrun by unvaccinated individuals requiring care. Our province even had to ship patients out and request help from the army.

I'M AN ENGINEER

TO SAVE TIME LET'S JUST

ASSUME THAT I'M NEVER WRONG

spencoid2 profile image
spencoid2 in reply to 6357axbz

I try to limit it to things that I really know, that are calculable. I just had an interesting experience where I was right but was wrong. A friend who knows little about electricity but even in her advanced age is interested in learning because she wants to do anything to preserve her independence. She even has a smart phone and an electric refrigerator. She was never going to give up the old gas powered dinosaur but she did. Well the "new"one has separate thermostats for the freezer and the refrigerator sections. I was helping to get it to limp along a few more years. She was trying to get the temperatures right by adjusting both thermostats. She said that when she adjusted the refer stat the freezer motor went on or off and vise versa. I said that is impossible because they have different ranges and a freezer stat could not control the refer range of temperatures. Well it turns out that she was right. They must have switched the stats at the factory and got the right temperatures by screwing around with the gas charge. Sort of like three wrongs making a right. Still don't know what to do to make it work right. Just put in more gas and will see before I trace all the wiring and discover what is really happening. The thing is heavy and needs to be moved out of a "cabinet" and is on top of a separate base. This is work for a younger guy. So I decided to apply some magic instead of engineering.

Is that absorption refrigeration or mechanical? I’m a bit of a refrigeration nut

spencoid2 profile image
spencoid2 in reply to holgar

I am one too :) The old refer that still works is a 1940 or earlier Servel.

I have owned and worked on many ammonia absorption units, mainly Dometics of course. I actually had the pleasure to go look at a venerable but we’ll maintained lithium bromide absorption unit which supplied an HVAC chiller in a local hospital. They used excess low pressure steam for the generator. It was old and brilliant in its efficiency, far better than the new electrical units that replaced it. The LP steam was used for the laundry and building heat in the winter and chilling in the summer.

I’m an engineer too, and understand what you mean. At first my wife noticed I was more easily irritated. Of course, I thought people had become more annoying. Things are different now.

I’ve spent years trying to move the thinking forward, with limited success. There are a few “experts “ in my small field that haven’t a clue of basic physics but are well regarded.

I’m getting to the point where I’m thinking that I just don’t care anymore. It’s a guess how many years I have left, and my colleagues will either get it right or won’t after I’m gone. It’s been particularly hard to let go, since the entire engineering discipline was created by my father. I’m giving up on my colleagues of 30 years and spending the rest of my working years training younger engineers in my approach.

I’m not an engineer . But I salute you .

Thank you . Yourea great addition to the club here .. Happy days to you ! 🏋🏽‍♂️

I've found the same thing with me in terms of losing patience. But with me, it's also a lack of toleration.

This might be a combination of things. One thing is the time issue, I often feel like I'm running out of time and have less tolerance for things that waste it, although, much of that is probably my perception. Another thing is having stage 4 cancer has taught me what's important and what isn't and my tolerance has gone down for what I think is unimportant. Again, this is subjective with each individual.

Another thing that has changed for me is that I can see through bullshit much easier now or at least it seems that way to me. And maybe that's one of those "I don't have time for this crap" kind of things.

Some of it is just overall frustration and I try to be careful not to take it out on others.

So don't think you are alone here. Speaking for myself, I think some of these changes are good. I just have to remember that everyone else is not in the same place.

Hey Spencoid! If we follow their dismal stats in our mind we just might fall right into them. I was told 36 months max. Now I’m working on my seventh year. I think that it was Samuel Clemens that wrote” There are lies and dammed lies and stats “! Don’t feed into them friend. We can do better then docs tell us we can. I’m not sugar coating the brutal deaths by APC .. we don’t have an expiration date on our ass . Keep rolling hombre! No promises or guarantees are given. . Still, life and death is beyond stats .. we know that none of us will make it out of this alive ! Stats don’t comprehend a strong will to live and a love for life. Pluck the day .

I find that I am much less patient since I went on lupron then Orgovyx. People that interupt me when I'm trying to explain something will usually be in for a lesson in manners. I find that I need to take a deep breath before opening my mouth.

I will certainly dispute your "authority" of a less than 30% chance of living 4 years. Did anyone factor in the chance of getting hit by a BP truck on Thursday? I especially dispute it if said by a Doctor. No one knows when we are checking out. I am starting year 5 of G9 with bone mets. There are so many advancements in the last 4 years alone that the standard of care keeps changing. Put $20 down for me on the over. You will live past 4 years.

I see from one of your prior posts that you are physically castrated. I thought that was supposed to make us more content, agreeable, and less prone to get angry or (in your words) really pissed off. I'm chemically castrated, and I think I'm better at letting go of things that that used to bother me.

I tell my grandkids that the ability to suffer fools gladly is an important skill for them to develop.

I think I am more compassionate and am willing to listen to strangers about their problems. The lack of patience is more with people I need to deal with regularly and who I think are wasting my time.

I think I have used about 4 of them so far.
