Have there been any studies about range of reaction to Firmagon injection? Size of irritated area, duration of discomfort. I'm starting to think the quality of my first week after each monthly shot might depend on the technique of the nurse who administers it.
Also, is there a minimum amount of time the medicine should be mixed before injecting?

The person giving the injection is most important to the amount and duration of discomfort. Firmagon website explains the proper way to administer the injection along with proper mixing procedure. Firmagon rep will actually give training to the staff if requested.Personal experience has made me very aware that the patient has to be their own advocate as I have been on firmagon for several years.
I have been in Firmagon for 26 months. For 23 months I got injected by various nurses and even doctors. Most of them don't know the correct technique so reactions were very variable. Sometimes just a little irritation and redness and light fever on the first night. Sometimes large red area, pain for 3 to 4 days and fever upto 100.5°F.
For past 3 months I inject myself and I have mild reaction and one night of low fever. One has to ensure all the powder has dissolved. It could take upto 20 mins. While injecting hold the fold of skin between the thumb and forefinger and drive the needle in at 90 degrees. Inject slowly and hold the needle for 30 secs after injecting is over and withdraw slowly.
Someone can assist and help you. It's frightening at first but quite easy once you try it. Follow the instructions that come with the injection meticulously.
I had the same questions, especially about the reconstitution and administrating of the drug. I brought these concerns to the attention of the nurse and she said she would slow down injection time and confirmed with me the reconstitution protocol. Tell them your concerns, ask them to slow injection time to avoid bruising and discomfort.
I have had 3 injections of Firmagon now over 2 months. The first time was a double dose to "introduce" me to it.PSA dropped from 19 to 3 in first month & side effects so far are libido loss, hot flushes, & soreness at the injection site for around 3 days.
The nurses administering it have been different but they inject at a 90 degree angle & wait for it to dissolve first.
It appears to be the best ADT yet but time will tell.
