My father got treated for prostate 3.5 yrs back. This July after surviving COVID got mds which is side effect of 40 radiations he received 3 yrs back and doctor kept on ignoring Low hemoglobin level. Since 5 months mds went into remission after mini chemo treatment. Now since last 3 weeks it shoot up and converted into AML (acute lukemia -blood cancer). Doctor asked us to immediately start intensive chemotherapy treatment but also mentioned 1st chemo will be very difficult to tolerate. And anything good or bad can happen so be prepared. I am so worried now. He said if we will not start chemo then hemmorage can happen anytime. We are so scared and disappointed with mds Ignorance and feeling lost. I can’t even travel from Singapore to India to be with my father as I am 7 months pregnant.

Kshipra,Sorry to hear that your father has now developed Acute Myeloid Leukemia after having Myelo Dysplastic Syndrome ...which is a not uncommon side effect of excessive Radiation treatment.

Treatment choice at this stage depends on how physically fit he is ? Can he withstand the standard, Intensive, Induction Chemotherapy ? If ,No ..the next choice is low intensity induction chemotherapy which may cause less danger to him.

Its very hard for a daughter to be in this tough situation. .You have to stay strong for your father and for the new life which is coming .

Thank you. We were asking doctor about Low hemoglobin since 3 yrs but he asked us to not focus on that just PSA. Thanks for the article. I just wish to meet my father even if it’s after 3 months when my delivery will be done.
