Based upon your personal experience ... what vitamins, supplements, minerals ... do you recommend that one should take ... when they are undergoing androgen deprivation therapy plus external beam radiation; VMAT ?
ADT plus EBR ... WHAT SUPPLEMENTS, VI... - Advanced Prostate...
ADT plus EBR ... WHAT SUPPLEMENTS, VITAMINS, MINERALS TO TAKE ?
Never take any supplements with radiation. You may be interfering with what the radiation is trying to achieve.
thanks Tall_Allen
I'm in full agreement with Tall_Allen - don't supplement during radiation - it will have an adverse affect.
After radiation, (depends on the dose) don't be surprised after a certain amount of time, fatigue occurs. I had a large dose (79 Gy) and about 1/2 way thru - I started to feel it - it increased after completion and took me a few months to fully recover my strength.
I'm sure that you'll discover what supplements you could take in due course. There are a few that do help - but avoid thinking that a supplement or two will be the silver bullet because there isn't sufficient evidence for many OTCs (and suspect quality of many of them) to spend precious dollars on.
I was guilty of 'overdosing' on supplements. I have it narrowed down to about 5 that I continue to take regularly. You will discover which ones - after doing some additional research and reading - there is some help - later on - but NOT now ....
I pro Claim that taking 50 mgs vitamin C IV’s twice weekly during my first year and throughout imrt helped me into a clear status from a deadly APC wrapped around my urology .
I won't debate the merits of IV Vit C - it was offered to me by a naturopath. I've seen some articulated position(s) about different forms and dosing and timing of Vit C, but I'm not convinced enough to go there - that extra - mile - that special method of administration etc .... I will state that I take Vitamin C every day. I have also read that 'excess' Vitamin C gets 'shed' (or if you have 2 much - you'll turn orange and rant as if you were a Tasmanian devil - just joking)
With all due respect (and I know you are a remarkable survivor) I would personally not advise a PCa patient to go that way - with any assured expectations that it would be life altering.
Of course, it's only an opinion.
I am reluctant, at this point in time (with this particular 'poster') to itemize what I do take - after reading and participating in this forum for a few years myself.
What I have chosen as supplements, they ALL came from within these forums. I read the supporting evidence and concluded that it was better than what I thought I knew (and was consuming).
I would encourage any PCa patient to look into the archives and discover what 'might help' in the battle. Of course, asking questions is a good thing - considering that supplementation could negate some forms of treatments - depends on the timing and potential interactions. particularly when it comes to radiation.
I'm not sure if you saw the recent one about Dukoral, for example ? I got my script from the 'doc' - he was as surprised as I was when he read about the 'study'.
Best regards, of course ....
My prostate cancer specialist and RO both told me no mega dosing vitamins while in 8 weeks imrt . He also told me I’d never get wood again after imrt . He said that RT was the nail in my coffin for Ed . I’m happy he was wrong on several accounts . . I’ve got night wood each night . I did high dose vitamin c twice weekly during imrt and my first year and a half under treatments . Under prescription from Dr Michael Uzick naturalpathic oncologist md . Genesis medicine Tucson Az . I also followed his strict holistic diet and complete nutrient plan . But now I cheat at Tim’s .. After imrt and double adt I went into undetectable mode and have stayed here over four years now .. I know that this plan saved me for now and helped pushed the APC away . Western MD’s don’t believe much in diet or nutrition. My uro gave 36 months to live and said that there was nothing that I could do to change my death sentence . Uzick said “ Thats Bs”! Did the flip .. I say heal yourself with professional advice ... you won’t find a lot of support here for natural ways . Most are caught up only on the conventional western med .. Zinc, lycopene , d-3, k-2,Meriva which is tumeric ,Hono pure , Ahcc mushroom complex . , melato and naltrexone prior to bed . I took citrus pectin and a few others that I halted in remission . If you’re serious about it . Find a nat md . For a few hundred $ they can set you on a path . I was 53 When I made the radical change from the SAD ...... I went into osteopenia from adt now im taking calcium , boron , strontium magnesium and the mo gives me prolia . No signs of cancer but taken down my joints by antibiotic overuse and double adt . If you push the pc away you must face cardio and osteo issues ... eat you veggies ,drop animal protein, or not? It’s your life . Good luck Nous ! ✌️
thank-you Whimpy-p
Wait on supplements until treatments finished and blood tests done. Then you will see what you need. Talk to dr's and read posts here to see what we use. Best of luck on your journey.
I've taken many combinations of supplements. I'm on Lupron and Xtandi. The supplements I take when I can afford them. I sometimes fill empty capsules with stuff from the spice rack. I'm 8.5 years out, stage 4 M1, 31 PSA at diagnosis. Gleason 9. My PSA is 0.2 and bone mets gone , I had 3. My right lung had tree in bud but a-acytl- Cysteine seemed to ameliorate that. I've taken many combinations ever since NIH relaxed restrictions on supplements. Whole body zyflamend is one I take. There is no proof that any of these do or did anything. I'm still here so I will still supplement when I can.
Exercise. HEAVY duty exercise. I have frequently posted a link here to a talk given by a leading oncologist about sarcopenia and ADT. It will be the best use of 20 minutes you can possibly find: youtu.be/TGEAiU5SnCU
Start tomorrow. Forget the supplements, vitamins, magic elixers. Exercise. I wish I had seen this before I started ADT (even though I did continue my 3 times a week at the gym - it wasn't really enough. And Covid inactivity just topped it off.)
Thanks . This video is me .. sarcopenia was first rapidly followed by osteopenia .
I hear and read about all kinds of supplements that supposedly either enhance radiation or mitigate the side effects. One is intravenous Vitamin C (IV-C). I've never done radiation myself, though, since I'm metastatic.
After radiation there are some supplements you should be taking, vitamin D3, and with xtandi Niacinamide.
