Not Sleeping Well

Billy_Boe profile image
91 Replies

I saw a post recently about people waking up at night a lot, and I have the same issue. I wake up many times a night to either go to the bathroom or because of the hot flashes from Lupron/Zytega. Also going through RT. Turning the light on in the bathroom would wake me up more where it is harder to go to sleep, and sometimes wake my wife up. We found a toilet seat at Lowes with a nightlight (blue light). We love it because I do not have to put a light on, and can get to sleep easier. People laughed when we bought it but it is very useful.

Ha ha, I love it. Lowes, is it battery operated or do you plug it into a socket? I use a night light but sometimes I feel like I could use more light.

It is battery powered. We ended up buying a couple of them. Even our kids think they are cool.

Some would suggest that even that minimal light (any light!) from the seat is enough to trigger the brain into thinking "daylight" and turning off melatonin production by the pineal gland. That is the rationale for avoiding light sources (especially blue) before bed and maintaining maximal dark during the night.

Is this true? And how much difference does it really make, any way? I can't say. But I can say that after I pulled it off for a few weeks, it was too difficult for me to care enough to maintain and I gave up altogether. (Back to watching TV and computer screens right up til bedtime, which I know is unwise.)

Yea , I can wake up a lot at night as well. Mostly to pee but because of assorted pains caused by skeletal bone joint deformations caused by my mets. I can “ go “ 6 - 8 or more times a night sometimes.

I keep one of those wide mouth orange juice jugs beside my bed and all I have to do is roll over , grab it ... use it ... and put it back. After a while, you hardly ( if ever ) wake up much ... it’s quick , easy, and sanitary .. and you go right back to full sleep quickly ( plus your wife loves it as it reduces toilet area cleanup 50% ) Dump it the next morning, rinse it out ... put a glug of isopropyl alcohol in it and it’s ready for the next night. ( keep the lid on tight and try not to knock it over at night reaching for it )

Pain wise ... those time delay morphine capsules, instead of the plain norco tablets makes for a much longer pain relieved nights sleep.

This is just what I do, your mileage will vary.

Ewwwwwwwww Yayahahahaya yayahahahaya yikes

Good one.

I sleep in a waterbed and in my condition just getting out of bed is challenging and takes a bit ( bad if you have to go NOW ) ... worse I sleep hooked up to a apap hose and “ two “ masks. If I had to “ unhook “ everything and then manage to climb out of the water bed it would be disastrous yayahahahaya Innovation is the key there. I can tell you that when your joints are as messed up as mine are and when you run adt - Zometa hot sweats then chills at night .... nothing beats the comfort of a well heated water bed. Very comfy outright , like sleeping on a heated hot pad , leave the ceiling fan on and just covering or uncovering fixes the adt sweats or chills. Since I sleep on a apap, those have built in analytics to tell you about the sleep quality of your nights sleep. With my set up, I generally sleep with a ahi ( apnea hypoxia index ) of less than one .... better than a newborn baby in other words. For me a good nights sleep in criticality important. I used to wake up to 150 times a night , never achieving rem sleep .... ahi of 85. A good night sleep helps meet the new day.

Peace buddy ... hope you manage to avoid “ the bug “ 💪💪💪

Well depends is a whole lot like my waterbed. Depends has that gel pak in the bottom to soak things up ....

My waterbed has been there over twenty years .... the water has turned to a kind of green gel now too. .... nice waveless effect. The custom body shaped depression in the middle is real comfy.

You do have to keep the temp up reliably... if you let it get low / cold .... the gel starts moving around and keeps you up at night.

This study compared reading on an iPad (which is heavily blue-light) before sleep to reading paper books with reflected light. In a very small study (12 young adults), the iPad kept people awake longer.

My solution to the nighttime pee trips is to keep my eyes closed and sit to pee. After 10 years I have the route down pat. A worse problem I have is when peeing in a urinal I have to watch out that I don't backsplash and pee on my leg. I had an infection from the catheter at the opening and it tries to heal up, partial blocking flow. I had to have two treatments in the urologist's office and one in the hospital to stop the healing. I refused to have a third treatment in the office.

Schwah profile image

That works for me. I know the path and just peek my eyes open and sit to pee. My wife says I fall back asleep before I hit the pillow.

monte1111 profile image

I know the path well. So do the cats. They take turns to see who gets to be tripped over. I think they sit on my speakers and play cat of the kitchen counter as well. What are they thinking when they stare at me? Trying to decide which part would taste the best?

monte1111 profile image
monte1111 in reply totoml77

Been a long time since I've had to worry about backsplash. Ever have those contests to see who could pee the farthest? (That's a funny word.) Always fun in the snow. Of course I had an advantage with my 13 inch hose. Now my 3 incher just dribbles. I suggest you sit and then close your eyes. You may be a perfect candidate for a flashing led toilet seat. Anyone who has forgot to put the toilet seat down knows why women grumble so much. And I guess, when they gotta go, they gotta go.

For me, a bite of cannabis cookie works best. After 15 years of getting my sleep in dibs and drabs of 1 to three hours, I now either sleep all night uninterrupted, or I get up once to pee and then sleep the rest of the night. It really does seem like a miracle . And since a number of studies have determined that cannabis is helpful against prostate cancer... what's not to like?

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply toBrianbcollins

Cannabis cookies worked for me as well ... but now I’m on the “ Kaiser opiates contract “ and they don’t allow anything not prescribed and cannabis is the first thing on their banned list. They dap me randomly and even grab an extra vial of bold from my monthly bloodwork as part of their surveillance program. They are very hardcore with me. If I break the contract they automatically cancel your opiate prescriptions and can bounce you out of their coverage if they want.

Rocketman1960 profile image

Kaiser is on a real opioid trip. They look for reasons to NOT subscribe.

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply toRocketman1960

I think the state of California has a big hand in it too. Kaiser will only give you 7 Vicodin’s in a bottle after walk-in outpatient day surgery and it’s not renewable. They give me 100s and 100s of Vicodin’s and 100s of dilaudid ..... the state makes them monitor me for opiates abuse ( prescribed levels of opioids present in bloodwork, no drugs on the banned list and they also can make me bring in the jar to count them now and then ) ... plus I have to keep a fresh Narcan OD kit at home too. Far as I understand only patients that are hospice, palliative and stage four can receive opiates like that from Kaiser ... basically just the croakers like me.

My wife has seriously debilitating osteoarthritis and used to get Vicodin‘s every month .... Kaiser quit handing them out .... and now tell her to exercise away the pain yayahahahaya talking about draconian.

Knowledgeable people know how to get high-grade pain meds right off of Amazon.com ... so it’s no biggie. Since I’m dap tested I can’t use them ... my wife can tho. She won’t touch mine ... won’t take them out of the mouth of a croaking husband she says ....

Go figure yayahahahaya

We have a night light too! My husband definitely doesn’t sleep well, rarely has. He suffers from sleep apnea and tried using the machine but he also gets a blocked nose from various allergies, so it is a lose-lose situation. He does sleep better if he doesn’t drink too much alcohol the night before, if that helps... he also seems to sleep better if he has had simple food rather than anything too rich. Last but not least, he sleeps his best if he has physically worked hard during the day and is super-tired. I find if he wakes up for more than an hour, it helps if I make him a hot milk (& malt) drink. He sleeps like a baby for hours after that! 😀

I'm just getting started on Eligard (in my 2nd week and taking Bicalutamide for another week) and so far I only need to get up once for a pee if I stop eating and drinking after 6pm although I take a drink when I get up to pee. This method seems to cut out the night time overheating. There's enough light in the house to allow for a pee without putting the light on.

Hey all. I finally feel I have some experience that may be helpful to write. Low dose estrogen patch (.1mg) changed my life. Thanks to you guys I knew to ask my urologist about it. After a year of Lupron and horrid sleep peeing and sweating and taking a long time to get back to sleep I was exhausted all the time. I also started melatonin which seems to help too. Taking 20 mg while reading, often these posts, before sleep is my current routine. I used to get up to pee and/or just wake to sweat 5-6 times a night. Now I get up to pee 1- 2 times and go right back to sleep. I still get an occasional flash now, but I no longer have to carry a towel around to mop up.

TJS-1 profile image

Had the same issues when I started ADT. Thought if I could just get into deep REM sleep I might get through most of the night; or at least better quality rest if only for a short period. Last year my MO prescribed 50mg Trazodone to be taken 1 hr before bed w/ 3mg Melatonin. No one likes to take more meds, including and especially me, but gave it a try.

I only took the Rx 1-2x evenings per week for a couple months, and now I get through the night waking only 1x to pee, and sometime not at all, even though I rarely use the meds any more. Sleeping through all the mild hot flashes, but still wake up for the occasional sweat lodge episodes. Could be just coincidence, and time or something else caused/helped with resolution, but might be worth a try.

Sleep apnea is a silent disease that causes kidneys to be more active while sleeping. There is no way to know you have it until you get tested. Treatment often reduces the number of bathroom trips. Sleep apnea causes many other health issues. Get tested.

in reply toron_bucher

I think you are right. I got tested for sleep apnea prior to a-fib ablation surgery. I was found to have sleep apnea and was issued a CPAP machine with a full face mask. One clue was that 99% of my a-fib episodes occurred while sleeping and sleep apnea is very much correlated to a-fib problems. In using that CPAP machine I've found that I can sometimes go the whole night without getting up to pee. Of course, taking the mask off and putting it back on is a hassle so that discourages bathroom trips too. I didn't fit the typical sleep apnea profile of being overweight and a loud snorer.

ron_bucher profile image
ron_bucher in reply to

My wife is a dentist who began screening and treating sleep apnea 10+ years ago. I did not fit the profile, but I was #1 guinea pig for her take home device she uses with her patients for screening. Some mild to moderate cases can be treated with an oral appliance. I've used CPAP and/or oral appliance since getting diagnosed. When every cell in the body is robbed of oxygen, negative health effects are cumulative and could be unlimited.

in reply toron_bucher

I'm wondering why my GP or conventional (not EP) cardiologist never had me tested. I've complained of fatigue for years. Guess I just didn't look the part.

ron_bucher profile image
ron_bucher in reply to

A vast majority of doctors are late to the table in recognizing sleep apnea and testing patients. I suspect the main reason is that immediate symptoms are invisible, so patients rarely or never complain about sleep. US doctors have historically been trained to treat symptoms, not to prevent problems. It might be the most under-diagnosed medical problem. It might take decades to kill some people, but it does it in stealth mode. If you believe in the value of PSA tests, testing for sleep apnea can be as valuable or more.

Well the hot flashes wake me up every night , we’ll did. Now with this virus, I just stay up all night and work on my novel, and I’ve never had a 9 to 5 job, so it comes naturally, no drugs! Just Vicodin to ease the pain in my bones, and give me a mild endorphin high. It’s not addictive like the other more potent stuff they wanted to give me. I was supposed to be dead a year ago according to RWJ. Love my new oncologist, but miss my balls! Yeah I’m a bachelor so I can do this kind of thing. It works for me ! Good luck my friend, this is a great site, with tremendous info and great people. But I’m writing all the time, so when I take a break, it’s usually not on cyber land!

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply toCaptsquid2u

It’s kinda good to keep the differences in medical terminology in mind when speaking of opiates .. not having them right can confuse your medical support crew and not convey your thoughts properly.

Addiction is a mental disease , not caused by physical dependence directly. People can be addicted to many things like drugs, sex, watches , buying things and lots of others.

Dependency is what happens with long term opiate use. All people that take opiates for an extended period of time build up extra opioid receptors , physically, in their brain. As time passes more and more receptors grow which causes “ tolerance “ which seems like “ loss of potency “ ... basically your body wanting more opioids to satisfy the additional receptors. The higher the dosage of opiates the larger amount of hungry receptors grow begging to be fed. It’s an endless cycle with opiates. Hydrocodone ( Vicodin’s) is equal 1 / 1 potency with morphine. morphine causes more of a physical buzz / high tho. All opiates cause dependency due to receptor growth ... and many personality types become addicted to opiate use as well.

Trying to get by keeping your dosage levels low is a good thing with opiates.

Peace brother ✌️✌️✌️
