Video Appointment with Johns Hopkins

Here's a funny...... My Sarcoidosis Clinic at Johns Hopkins called to schedule me a video appointment for my bronchial infection....but the stipulation was that I get in my car and drive 20 minutes to Maryland for the video appointment. They said they can't cross state lines. I'm wondering what the whole hospital does for people coming from far away states that are sick and need appointments because they're only accepting video appointments. Do any of you think they can tell on the phone if I stay in my car at home? Are any of you dealing with this too?

LOL. They can probably tell from the cell phone tower if they bother to check - but I would be very surprised if they didn't just take your word for it.

The Roman telemedicine site has docs that have multiple licenses in most US States. Was so easy getting a prescription...

Hi Jackie,

See:

heritage.org/public-health/...

"Despite the clear benefits of telehealth for efficient care delivery, federal and state regulations are still making it hard for this market to grow.

"Under previous Medicare regulations, for example, doctors in Medicare Advantage plans couldn’t submit bills if they used phone, email, or Skype to consult with patients remotely in deciding whether or not they needed an in-office visit. However, recent changes to Medicare Advantage rules have made it easier for doctors and patients to use telehealth.

"Those welcome rule changes should be just a beginning. Other barriers to the wider use of telehealth remain. Among them are wide variations in the description of telemedicine among the states, with different definitions, regulations and reimbursement arrangements. Only nine states have issued licenses related to telehealth that allow an out-of-state licensed medical professional to render services using telehealth.

"Other common restrictions, according to the Center for Connected Health Policy, include the types of services and providers that can be reimbursed, whether someone has to have an in-person visit with a physician first, or whether patients can access telemedicine from their own home.

"Because state lines are no barrier to virtual consultations, state officials should review their laws as well as their regulations and ensure they allow their residents to see doctors across state lines. States should lighten requirements that block virtual consultations, such as requiring an in-person visit before a provider can see a patient via telemedicine. "

Best, -Patrick

& khn.org/news/telemedicine-s...

"Medicare last week allowed all enrollees to use telemedicine — an option that previously was available only to people living in remote areas and for a specific, short checkup. The federal government also said doctors could practice across state lines during the pandemic to treat Medicare patients virtually, even if not licensed in the patient’s state. California, Florida and other states have also waived their requirements that a physician be licensed in the state to provide care."

Your doctor probably is not licensed to practice in your state. A technicality, so I would just say "if asked" that you are instate.

You forgot to mention that there's an exception. You would be able to watch it anywhere on a Dumont black and white rabbit ear antenna set but only if it had a magnifying glass mounted in front of the screen and the set was the size of half a living room . Also you must have a thick black wired electric copper horse/clock sitting on top of the TV.

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

That's not true. I had a video appt last week from Hopkins and I don't live in MD. Your doctor was relying on apparently outdated info.

I got another call from Hopkins making sure I would be video calling from Maryland instead of Pennsylvania. Lucky you...;) but a 20 minute drive will be okay... so I don't have to pay for an expensive appointment..... just in case..

Thank you :)

That's interesting as they told me that in-state info could be ignored. Probably different interpretations by different personnel. Of course, they have no way of really knowing even if they looked at your ISP location as that could be some distance from where you lived actually.

But, yes agreed that driving 20 minutes is a lot better than driving to Baltimore especially if they asked you to confirm you will be in MD.

I just got off of the phone from yet another Hopkins call. They said they were thinking...... that I would get a $5000. fine if pulled over in Maryland during my video appointment and it was okay now to call from home. At least.....they were thinking.....I.......was only thinking......I need this appointment! So home will be my video appointment..... for now lol.

They said everyone's helping everyone and they're all scrambling everywhere to work together to get things done. May God/ The Universe or Whomever..... bless each and Every One!

Thanks everyone ;)

ditto. We are in Costa Rica. Also have a home in TN. They told us the same. Have an appt Feb 23. They require me to travel to Baltimore and incur all the travel expenses.
