Coronavirus / Covid19 affects support groups and conferences

Malecare in-person support groups are on hiatus until we have a better understanding of Coronavirus / Covid19 . The USA based Centers for Disease Control is warning men 60 years and older to avoid unnecessary travel and public group gatherings. All of our group members are referred to our online groups, like this one. Surveys tell us that most men who attend in-person groups are not interested in online groups, so we don't expect to see a surge in membership here. The exceptions to this finding are already here. Stay safe. Avoid conferences and - when possible - public transportation. Use conference agendas to identify speakers and google recent papers and YouTube talks by those speakers. Much of what you find online will likely be what they planned to talk about in person. Whether its a common cold, flu or Covid19, we want everyone to stay healthy.

Darryl, have you ever tried zoom or other video conferencing for support groups?

Thanks for the suggestion. We tried Skype conference for a group in Oklahoma and another in Hawaii several years ago. Better than nothing but no where near as collegial or supportive as an in person experience

Not to overdo the bad news on the Coronavirus but I think these statistics are important particularly when many members have treatment induced compromised immune systems.

“Italy’s Civil Protection Chief and Coronavirus Emergency Commissioner Angelo Borrelli said Tuesday that 45% of those that have died were aged between 80 and 89, and 32% were in their seventies, 14% were over 90, 8% were in their sixties and 2% were aged between 50 to 59.”
