Dental Problems Anyone??

PabloK profile image
23 Replies

Just went to the dentist and found out that i have a mouthful of cavities. I haven't had a cavity for the last 40 years. I've been on Lupron/zytiga for a little over a year - i was also at my urologist for my lupron shot and asked him if this is common - and got a shrug and a "everyone reacts differently"

Anybody have the same??

I haven't been very good about getting to the dentist (i have been out of town a lot...to the tune of over 100k miles per year) - but was in 5 years ago and had no cavities (just the tooth i broke in the DR Congo and had to get patched over there- see picture)

Hi Pablo, was the dental care in DR Congo good? I see the spit sink in the picture haven’t seen one of those in a while😀! I just saw my dentist yesterday and no cavities. I’ve been on ADT for about 9 months now. My dentist and MO told me to take care of any dental issues before getting an XGEVA shot. I haven’t gotten the shot yet but I went went through about 3 hours of dental work to get ready! My understanding is you can’t have an extraction while on XGEVA.

I have to say no - this was a company sponsored dentist for the local workers primarily - I was told by other expats that its ok to get some bondo put into lost fillings, but not to get any injections or anything intrusive - but having said that, the dentist was professional and the tools came in a wrapped and presumably sterile container.

I have to admit that i wasn't great at taking a calcium supplement - so obviously, i'm adding that to my daily must do's.

Yup. Off Zometa for the last two months so I could have five crown put in. Go back on Zometa on Monday. Not a lot of fun. Could have been the Zometa or the Xtandi or the Provenge or the Lupron or the Taxotare or who knows.

5 is a lot ....... Good luck 🍀

It certainly isn't an unknown side effect of ADT.

Hadn't had a cavity in decades, and in the past 3 months I've had 2 - one requiring a root canal. I'm in my 13th month of ADT. I recall seeing some data somewhere that indicated that roughly 80% of men on ADT experienced dental issues, but can't recall where I saw it or what the data actually was.

ADT is the gift that just keeps on giving.

My husband had same treatment

.also had Jevtana (10 chemo 6 Radium223 included 6 Xgeva (bone strength) My husband is in the dental chair every 3mos , mostly Cleaning n gum check

Has had a few cavities, using tpaste w/extra flouride n half/half peroxide /water after brushing. Our Oncologist INSISTED on good dental dental care.By the GRACE of.GOD he remains in remission, March will mark 1yr. We pray that ALL of you are guided well by dr's and you ALL step into the healing light 💜💜💜

in reply toSaydeebugz

Thank God he’s in remission . I’m gratefully the same.. even in remission damage gone from treatment is causation in dental issues. But we are lucky to be alive . 🙏

Better check if your dentist is getting ready to do an expensive room addition or the like. That could explain all the sudden teeth work. Lol

Been on lupron/zytiga year and a half and go to dentist every 6 months. No cavities. I did break a tooth and needed a crown. Never stopped prolia since i convinced dentist he could do the crown as it does not involve bone invasion. He agreed and i was happy to get my tooth fixed quickly

I had a serious mis diagnosis resulting in loss of 40% of my jaw in 2016. This came in the form of ORN. I was told to use a fluoride tray every night for the rest of my life...This came from dental oncology at MD Anderson....Before radiation I needed no extractions..Anyway I fly with a dentist who was involved with a group who formulated a toothpaste with 8% Arginine , which is an amino acid..When I mentioned this to MD Anderson they state the Colgate people were showing it to them...I took a chance and started buying this from England after reading the research in 3rd world countries..It is 2020 and yet to have a problem...being one person is not enough but they use it everywhere (Colgate) in the world except USA... Not really sure why....I understand some block with FDA and other chatter...anyway you can look it up....order it on Amazon and it arrives at your doorstep. I buy a case at a time....Colgate with 8% Arginine...this subject never comes up here because we do not brush our prostate.......maybe we should....a friend called me knowing my condition and said a new vitamin D absorption study said laying in the sun and getting it on your asshole is effective for colon and prostate....now that was a great picture of a beach setting.....!!! Blue Skies, Sky King and Penny (woof)

Just to be clear--you suffered from osteoradionecrosis ? You received radiation therapy to the head/neck area?

I have not heard of arginine as an aid in preventing caries. A quick scan of the literature shows some lab studies, but very few actual clinical studies, and none that look high quality.

I don't discount it--we're always looking for new stuff. Recently, that new stuff has been silver diamine fluoride--works well. Unfortunately causes bad staining, so there is resistance to using it.

Don't let any hack dentist(or urologist) tell you it isn't true On my last post of this, someone suggested using PLUS white gel and that's helped quite a bit, so thanks to whomever that was.

Please note that your references point to increased risk of periodontal disease for patients on ADT--this is generally recognized for many forms of treatment involving esp. steroid forms of ADT.

PabloK seems to be concerned primarily with cavities. It is possible that some of the medications may dry the mouth though (but I'm not aware of this specific complaint with ADT) and if so it may increase decay as well. It's just not documented (to my knowledge).

I just had 10 upper teeth pulled & got denture. My onocologist would not give me Xgeva (bone med.) until any needed dental work was done. Xgeva can cause dead jaw bone issues.

in reply tocarbide

Whoa?😩

Yes, my husband has had two infections in his tooth. Bad as in entire side of face swelled. So, yup new issues with teeth. One more thing to add to the mix.

If this is a dentist you are seeing for the first time, I would urge you to consult another (preferably one that comes with strong recommendation from someone you know and trust, esp. if that someone has been going to that dentist for a long time).

I have found that patients who leave my practice and go elsewhere sometimes will call back in alarm when they are told they have many cavities. And yes, I am somewhat conservative as far as finding work to do in someone's mouth, but...there are sadly a lot of what we call "aggressive dentistry" out there.

I know of no literature connecting ADT with dental caries.

have had four teeth pulled with one more to go surgically due to fractures in the teeth. could have been caused by poor dental work from last dentist but one never knows
