Fractions Of Pallitive Radiation Question

When a radiation oncologist says ” 5 fractions” to an area ....what does that mean? Is it the times he has to go in for treatment?? He mentioned giving my husband 5 fractions to his hip and pelvic area . He talked so quickly and crammed so much in to a few minutes. But I grabbed that info.

Yes - 5 treatments. But only one large dose may be necessary for pain palliation:

Talk to a radiation oncologist that uses SBRT radiation equipment, and see what options they provide you. Maybe they will propose one treatment.

Yes, you have it right. The radiologist determines the total radiation necessary for the required result and then decides how to divide the treatment in order to reduce side effects and improve the main effect. Fractions in this case means visits, or sessions, enough to accomplish the total necessary radiation dose.
