FYI - MDAnderson + Off Label Drugs for Cancer
It is estimated that somewhere between 15-30% of all prescriptions written in the U.S. are being used for indications other than for what they were initially approved, known as 0ff-label prescribing. So I'm not surprised to see the medical establishment looking for therapies in already existing medications. Hopefully they will stumble across a few to help us out.
That really makes sense! In fact my husband's GP just gave him Celebrex as we showed him the research that it works synergistically with Atorvastatin against prostate cancer.
Am so happy that traditional oncology is finally catching up to what Care Oncology, Jane McLelland and others have long been doing to cure themselves. It's about d*** time!
I believe that Celebrex is effective. Here is the info from 2007 (google): "Green Tea and COX-2 (Celebrex) inhibitors Combine to Slow Growth Of Prostate Cancer."...
I would like to ask what dose of Celebrex and Atorvastatin?
What is the result, side effects?
Thank you for the info! He drinks tons of green tea too! He is on 40 mg of Atorvastatin. The Care Oncology team will monitor his bloodwork with the idea to increase to 80 mg over the course of a few weeks if the indicators are good. He has been on that protocol for three weeks now with zero negative side effects feeling better every day.
Celebrex - he just got the scrip yesterday and will start today. 200 mg once a day. Trying to figure out what time of day is best to take it.
Be aware that when starting statin therapy it is common to see elevated levels of your liver enzymes. Usually they return to normal within a few weeks of therapy. Mine were normal at 40mg of atorvastatin but AST/ALT both increased above normal limits with the 80mg dose. Because I had also just started abiraterone we weren't sure which one was the cause. We then reduced atorvastatin dose back to 40mg and both enzyme levels returned to normal. The COC doctor said we would revisit the 80mg dose later after I had been on the abiraterone for a longer time. I've been on the COC protocol. Lupron and abiraterone since the end of March, so far no major issues. Other than the 4 normal meds, did they suggest any other supplements?
That is what the COC doc (Dr. Meakin) said as well.
He did recommend that my husband eat more organ meats and also take desiccated liver daily to help raise his hemoglobin levels. He also recommended that he take nicotinamide riboside - 300 mg 3X. He has been doing all of that and noticed an uptick in energy. But he is only about 3 weeks in to the full COC protocol.
And yet my MO at MDA is not willing to consider prescribing metformin for my PCa.
Ever since Dr Charles E Myeres retired, I have not found anybody who will prescribe off label. There are a couple of drugs I want to get. Anybody find a doctor who will go off label?
I trust the drugs you are referring to are not Metformin and Avodart? They should be pretty easy to get from someone I did not have an issue.
You can buy without a prescription:
Fenbendazole,
Berberine,
Orlistat (google from 2017: Anti-Tumorigenic Potential of Novel Orlistat_Aicar Combination in Prostate Cancer Cells.... ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/283....
Ibuprofen (google: "Synergistic cell death by EGCG /Green Tea/ and Ibuprofen.
Etc......
I take it that he is at MDA?
We are in NY- and here is our strategy:
Once we find compelling research, we run in by the oncologist - who won't prescribe anything but SOC but will give his thoughtful opinion if it's a good idea or not and if it will interact negatively with the chemo (jevtana).
With that info, my husband's GP or functional medicine doc is then happy to prescribe.
Thanks for the post. I decided not to try metformin (for now). I am taking Celebrex (say you need it for arthritic pain and you won't have to argue prostate cancer) 200 mg in morning and 200 mg in late afternoon (plus Xgeva). I believe the test was 400 mg twice a day ( plus zoledronic acid). Correct me if I'm wrong. Asked MO to double dosage. Was told ok for short period of time because she thought potential side effects too risky for long term. Believe I will leave it where it is at. We are always making decisions with half knowledge, wrong knowledge or no knowledge. Cancer is a game best played in Las Vegas. Enjoy.
