I had local anesthetic for the markers and gel pad placement. Pain was very mild, could feel it happening while watching on the monitor. Pretty cool really.

Gold flecks are placed into the prostate to act as three dimensional markers when having radiation. It is mildly painful and a minimal anesthetic like twilight sleep is used. When doing radiation on the prostate gland the radiation machine has to know exactly where the prostate is located. Unfortunately the prostate is not attached to a bone and can move slightly during the radiation. For example if feces or gas move down the large intestine next to prostate it can change the area being radiated during the radiation. So the answer is that the gold flecks are placed in a three dimensional figuration. Then the radiation machine reads these flecks which are different for each patient. If the prostate moves during radiation the radiation machine instantly follows or instantly shuts off. This makes the radiation extremely accurate. The gold flecks stay in the patient forever and may be used at a later time for future radiations. They do not cause any further pain or problems. I also had radiation in other parts of my body (hip bones). They put a small dot tattoo that had metal in it on the middle of my chest. This allowed the radiation machine to find the center line of my body.
