You can have a genomic test (Decipher) done on it, but I wouldn't bother is it wasn't recent. Cancer genomics can change quickly.
Thanks
you obviously know a lot about this. What about my original question about material preserved in formaldyhide?
UCSF is doing this with me. Signed papers of permission 2 weeks ago. Foundation One if I recall? Had genetic testing done with Invitae a year+ ago. Didn't even realize prostate specimen was stored after removal? I'm a breast cancer survivor. Now aPC direct metastasis to the lungs (no where else). Detected by PSMA-ga68 at UCSF last month . I told MO do whatever they want with me . Test me or the specimen! If its a help to me or the future of a cure I'm their guinea pig. Good luck to you on your journey!
Thanks I’ll follow your advice
Sharp,
In 2017 I was able to qualify for free genetic testing offered by the "precision medicine" startup Strata Oncology. It used biopsy tissue provided by my cancer center with the goal of matching patients with available drugs and/or clinical trials.
About 120 genetic defects were tested and, based on an extensive family history of cancer, I was pleasantly surprised that the results came back with no defects.
However, since I was about 4 years out from surgery + post-surgery adjuvant IMRT when the testing was done, I would agree with the comment by Tall Allen that genetics change over time and my 4-year old tissue might not accurately reflect current cancer genetics; i.e., shorter time away from surgery = more reliable results.
The Foundation One testing does look to provide information that could help direct treatment options that would not otherwise be considered. As I am currently off treatment, I am saving that option for a time when additional genetics might be useful/needed.
