There is indisputable proof that testosterone prevents prostate cancer.
I agree with Nalakrats, caution in interpreting these results is warranted. The abstract doesn't have a lot of detail. I hope to see the full paper soon.
That said, this research adds to the growing body of evidence that improving the quality of men's lives with testosterone therapy does not increase the risk of prostate cancer. It suggests exactly the opposite.
Perhaps someday we will be able to dispose of the pernicious lie that giving testosterone to a prostate cancer patient is like "throwing gasoline on a fire."
In my morning traffic commute recently I observed a license plate that said "4TRT". Ten months of half of a daily dose of Androgel testosterone replacement therapy (TTh or TRT) 3 years after PCa treatment ended my 3-year 0.02 PSA winning streak. What is evident though is that with the aging baby boomer population that we are entering a PCa disease epidemic (which in my mind could be infectious and/or genetic) which aggressive TRT might or might not help. When I got my Androgel prescription I let it sit on the shelf for 3 months before giving it a try and finally my fatigue level got so high from low T I decided what the heck. Just before seeking ADT I asked the Oncologist what about treating my biochemical recurrence (PSADT 2 mos.) with TRT instead of ADT and there were no studies to support considering my question. Now I am on a blocker for however long that will last.
How low was your total testosterone when you felt so fatigued that you considered Trt?
It had been steady at 175. During 9 months of Xtandi it rose to 800 and then when I exited the trial it stabilized around 400 and my PSA rocketed but at same PSADT of 2.5 months. Oddly enough my T floated around 200 after using half dose of Androgel for 6 months. My urologist was puzzled to be so low.
I might just print out that paper and wave it in front of my urologist. I don't expect a favorable response.
