crunchy Foods

Here's something I've discussed with my Therapist and want your take on:

As adults with ADHD, why do we concentrate better if we eat crunchy food? Is it because we subconsciously are concentrating on the crunching, or is it because we're doing 2 things at a time, and that allows us to concentrate better? I really don't know, and neither did she!

I tried this the other day during a long meeting that was quickly becoming quite tedious and boring. I grabbed my bag of baby carrots, put the call on mute, and munched away. Before eating, I was prone to spacing out and trying to work on other things. After about 10 min. of eating, I was totally into the meeting.

Can anyone explain this to me?

Chewing heightens everyone’s concentration. Not just an ADHD thing. It’s why baseball pitchers always have giant wads of chew or gum in their mouths. Apparently there’s a whole bunch of data on how much chewing heightens mental performance but no one really knows why. It’s basically a stim that gives your monkey mind something to do 😄 wired.com/2011/11/the-cogni...

It’s so frustrating that kids aren't allowed to chew gum in class - 19th century rule that goes against 21st century science. Crunchy food of course is also the most delightful delicious stuff ever 😬😬😬

my guess that pleasant experience of crunching is dopamine inducing.

it could be different for everyone. For some, the crunch drowns out our thoughts so we can focus on the ones that matters. Another option is it’s a way to fidget.
