One thing I've always found unique- for lack of a better word- about having ADHD is our ability to hyperfocus. Most of us can't typically focus on anything more than 10-seconds, and then we’ll hyperfocus on something for like 4 hours- go figure!
I naturally love to research stuff to death, and that's when I tend to hyperfocus the most. For example, the other day I was trying to research WW1 ranks for a client. I was so into my research, I never heard the phone- sitting 2 ft. from my ear, or my roommate, yelling at me to ask about getting dinner. I just kept working until he finally came and banged on my door, claiming he was going to dinner w/o me if I didn't come that second. I went to dinner as I never miss a meal.
To me, being able to hyperfocus like that, and totally toon out the world, is a super power at times, and a curse at others. When I need to get things done, I know it won't be hard for me to get a lot done, if I can get myself started. But, I know that there's times I need to only work for a short time, and then I need to be more aware of my surroundings.
I use, as I've discussed in other postings, the Pomodoro Technique to control my hyperfocus, you??
