Not sure how big a role, but trouble falling asleep is often a problem and melatonin can help regulate sleep. As for depression, it is very often comorbid with adhd. Sometimes I think untreated ADHD itself can lead to depression due to life troubles such as rejection in relationships, failure to complete education, job loss, etc.

I find that I often have to be near exhausted to fall asleep because of the high-energy level and many thoughts and ideas that flow through my mind. I read to help me relax at night. Depression may be a by-product of having life troubles due to the way ADHD hijacks our brains and emotions and causes us to make poor choices and not complete tasks.
