hi everyone

I haven’t been on here in months. Happy to report my son started Vyvanse in April on top of the guanfacine extended release he had been on since over a year ago and Vyvanse has really helped him at school w focus but also w his impulsiveness which had led to some aggression before. We are hopeful he will finish school year on a good note. We did genomind test to confirm what medication would metabolize best for him.

Anyways. He originally started guanfacine in March 2022 to support his eye tic and emotional regulation and w start of guanfacine his eye tic was dramatically reduced.

For background the last 6 months his pharmacy has had the guanfacine Manufacturered by NORTHSTAR.

He started Vyvanse in April.

we did not see any tics April or May while on guanfance (northstar manufacturer)

Over The last week we had to pick up guanfacine refill and I noticed it’s not North Star it’s ‘apotex’

And he’s still on same Vyvanse. And his tics are back and more frequent. 😒

Wondering if anyone here has noticed different effect of generic guanfacine depending on the manufacturer.

I don’t think it’s Vyvanse causing it bc he didn’t get tics the last 2 months of being on Vyvanse. I noticed the Tics when refill had diff manufacturer for the extended release guanfacine.

Anyone know if I can ask the pharmacy to use a particular manufacturer!!?!?

thanks in advance

You can definitely reach out to your pharmacy and ask about the manufacurer. I can't recall which child or medication but we went through something similar. The pharmacy was able to request the one generic manufacturer for me.

Guanfacine is actually a treatment for tics. Kids with ADHD are at higher risk of developing tics in general (meaning when off medication). Tics can develop as a side effect of stimulant medication. Of course, it’s difficult to say definitively whether a different manufacturer guanfacine product isn’t the culprit. You could try asking for that manufacturer and see if that makes a difference. I don’t know if pharmacies can special order another manufacturer’s medication. There are several factors that could be the cause, and it may be tough to sort out. Tics are quite common even in kids without ADHD. Im sure this is not actually a helpful answer, sorry!

I can definitely see this happening.

My son is on Concerta during school hours and we noticed when there was a shortage we had several different manufacturers and on two different occasions we received a call from the school because his heartbeat was over 150.

When speaking to the pharmacist he informed me that when looking at his record he noticed it only happened when taking the manufactures that put dyes in their pills.

He also told me it could be the way the manufacturer was binding their pills. Unfortunately their is no way of knowing but it made it harder to get with the shortage going on.

Due to the shortage our son’s pediatrician wanted us to start taking Vyvanse over the summer which we just picked up so hoping for good news.
