This is hard. Is he also seeing a therapist? How do the meds make him feel? Is it the right dose? Does his personality still shine through? Our 16 year old is very aware of how different meds make him feel and we encourage him to speak about med changes when he sees his therapist and his psychologist. At this age, he needs to feel some control.

Once we knew (and he acknowledged) that the medicine was working, he has always been compliant. When he’s occasionally refused, we tell him it’s not a choice. In our family, that means you lose your phone, tv, gaming privileges, etc. that usually gets him to take it.

My 16 year old grandson knows the meds help him succeed in school and to help with his anxiety and depression. They have never been an issue. Now that he is about to get his driver's license he knows no meds, no car.
