Do they know he has ADHD? One of the best ways to calm my son is to have him run around and break a sweat! There are many ways to discipline someone with adhd. But PUNISHING that person is not a good one. Especially if it takes away times with lots of physical activity. I hope you get this figured out.

She is right my son Best thing is in school is recess runners and he is so proud of all the awards he get for running and making first place another thing he loves is soccer and basketball so taking away recess is definitely not a good idea for a child with ADHD you should set up a meeting with his guidance counselor

Thank you. Would you know who to contact for an advocate to help me ask teachers for different consequence? I also have in football but reading from some of things that would hurt his self esteem. I am not sure it is a good thing if the coaches run them extra for their attention span response when they are on the sidelines.

Getting the school staff on board with his diagnosis and particular needs is extremely important. Reach out to his teacher(s), guidance counselor, administration staff, etc. and request an IEP meeting. Bring his diagnosis, medical records and medication information with you. Not only will this get you on the right path, it allows for a team approach on how best to handle him in school and it protects you/him from future punishments that may be detrimental should his behavior cause problems. The same thing happened to my son, and we found by working with the Occupational Therapist in school and initiating simple activities that allowed his body to move more, (such as being a helper, taking things to the office, finding something on one side of the room, being at the end of the line, etc.) he was able to exert energy, keep his body moving which helps to alleviate the activity that ADHD brings with it. We also encouraged his teacher to use different strategies other than taking away recess (like making him eat lunch with the principal instead of with his friends) so he would still be able to get out & move.

Thank you! I have him in football an when he's acting out in school the coaches are to be told an they do the running on the hill an it seems to help some . But after sitting all day it's needed . I did get an advocate that went to school with me last week to place a plan of action . Hopefully this will help

Have him evaluated for a 504C or IEP -- the school is required to do this evaluation at a parent's request. Once a plan is in place, it can include components such as not allowing to withhold recess. There may be other types of accommodations in school that they can make that will help with his ability to control himself and avoid the need for school discipline. I'm just learning about this myself, and about what accommodations might be helpful-- there are books with much advice on this. Outside of school-- and even daily before school if possibly--get him lots of exercise.

I'm going to have to agree with the woman above on the 504. It's called a 504 plan. Got to look into it. I'm 35 now and I had it when I was in school. I was diagnosed in third grade with ADHD and OCD. I went to some sort of trial period for a supplement called hemeoapathy and they didn't do anything to me except for royally screw my life up. Their process changed my cell structure around due to the hyperactivity and gave me immune disease celiac disease and I can't even begin to tell you what else. The ADHD is a side effect of an allergic reaction. Whether it's an allergic reaction to food coloring or what you never know. I have an allergy to gluten.

Thank you ! I did have 504 but it seems since he's in 4 th grade here in Texas alot of it has been canceled . But the IEP was never filed on his behalf ! The advocate went with me to do this before school started . The advocate just went back with me last week to get everything in place finally . I am very thankful for your input also an so saddened by your experience .
