My son is 14 and will be starting high school on Monday. He was diagnosed at 4 with high functioning autism and SPD but after taking him off gluten, dairy and dyes, these vastly improved. A few months ago our son lost his HFA diagnosis and gained ADHD and GAD (anxiety) diagnoses. Because of his history and the transformation I've witnessed, I view ADHD as "autism lite" and pay attention to anything that helps both groups.
Three years ago our son was diagnosed with Pyroluria. He had been suffering from an involuntary motor movement (hand wringing) and bouts of suicidal depression. The treatment for Pyroluria is prescription vitamins, including (for him) high levels of zinc and b6. The vitamins raised his baseline self-esteem and eliminated the bouts of suicidal depression. It was like a miracle.
My boy still has ADHD so intense that he couldn't make it through the testing for ADHD. I have lingering concerns over stealth dyslexia since he never sounded out words, has poor handwriting, is a poor speller, and writes the minimum he can get away with.
We filed against our school district for Due Process, and they agreed to pay for his private high school with small classes and (wonderful) accomplished male ADHD/Anxiety teachers.
Although he has come a long way and I am very happy with his team of doctors and school situation, I realize he has serious food intolerance issues, indicating a likely leaky gut. Like most ADHD/Autistic kids he craves sugar and loves GFCF pasta, breads and cookies. I am embarking on an effort to heal his gut and hoping to improve his ADHD as a result. Also hoping to tweak his vitamins to help the anxiety and ADHD. I am not opposed to medication but realize it could be tricky with his zinc dosing.
Then hoping to focus on a job for me!
