Can Takayasu's artritis cause an enlarged spleen? My GP knows nothing about Takayasu's and i am still waiting for my specialist referal.
As far as I know any type of vasculitis can cause an enlarged spleen. It is something that you should talk over with your "vasculitis" consultant. I hope you soon hear about your referral soon. I am afraid most GP's don't know or understand anything about TAK. John and I attended a meeting a year ago...Prof Paul Bacon ( he has a special interest in TAK) gave a presentation on TAK. He was wonderful. There were about 70 people at the meeting. Prof Bacon told us there were about 250 people in the UK at that time with TAK. 5 of those 250 were at the meeting. 3 young mums and a lovely lady in her 60's. Thank you for your reply, It's a great help. It was just by chance I was diagnosed, my eye specialist put me on steriods so I had to attend rheumatology. The specialist started asked all these questions and then announced I had TAK. He had a lady 15yrs ago with it so knew what to look for. Everything I've had since a child now makes sense and I don't feel like a fraud. There is a bit of a debate as to where to send me, Durham or Newcastle so I'm stuck waiting for them to decide. Think they sometimes forget they leave us waiting and worrying in the meantime. Thanks again, have a lovely Christmas
As you may know, Dr David Jayne of Cambridge is one of the UK's leading experts on vasculitis. On behalf of someone else with vasculitis living in the Northeast, I recently asked him to recommend someone with extensive knowledge of vasculitis. He recommended Professor Isaacs - at Newcastle, I think. Because Tak is so rare, you really should be seen by someone who really knows about it. It is rather different to other types of vasculitis. Oddly enough, although Tak is rare here, it is relatively common in India, and some of the best Tak doctors are to be found there. Rather a long way to go for treatment though!
