Hello,

I was told it was hard to loose weight after transplant as I was taking steroids, prednisone. Now I'm down to 5mg per day, it's a bit easier.

Hope this helps.

She could be retaining fluids which prednisone can make you do, hence the puffy face. Also it is just not eating that is important exercise also needs to be incorporated into your daily routine of things.

She may have lost a considerable amount of weight when she was transplanted. That happened to me. She may just be regaining that weight.

Hello! No ,she lost no weight! she was 61 kilos before trasplant, and now she put on 7 kilos , 3 months post transplant!

Could be water retention, is she drinking her daily allotted fluids, if not she could be storing the fluid in her body, definitely talk to your renal team, food wise you only put on what you put in, and if she’s eating less the weight should not come on. The steroids don’t make you fat, they make you hungry so you eat more. Is she going to toilet regularly pee and no2, also is she keeping up with exercise (lots of walking), I hope you can help her.

Since prednisone can induce weight gain, you should ask the transplant team to consider whether a prednisone-free immunosuppressive regimen can be prescribed. This is now increasing in popularity, given the many negative side-effects of prednisone. Also, cyclosporine can give patients puffy cheeks which make them look fatter than they are.

Hi Skevi.

I am on the same medication as your daughter hunny. That’s a really strange one to be fair. First off can I ask how old your daughter is? Secondly with the meds we are on I do not believe there is a major side effect of weight gain, I have gone from a size 16 UK size to a size 12. If this is really concerning yourself and your daughter please speak to your transplant specialist or the team, if you get no answers talk to your primary doctor GP. Is everything else ok ie BP,bloods and everything? Please if you don’t mind could you keep me informed of how she is doing and what is said, and I will ask some questions my end let’s see if we can help her sort this out. Lots of love Caz

Of course the meds you are on cause weight gain. Check the side effects. Best wishes

Maybe it’s time to work with a proper Renal dietitian and see if they can point you which is the best route to go down. I would not like to take a guess and cause more issues than you already have. Just remind her she is doing really well and that you’re so proud of her. Hopefully everything else will fall into place in time and with help from the right professionals. Please please keep me informed xxx

My mother had a Kidney transplant in January 2016, this left her with a massive hernia. Not to alarm anyone, but she died in October due to organ failure, and pneumonia. She ha a faulty heart valve or chamber, the liver and kidneys failed

She went to we the surgical team who said to to hernia removal as it may cause complications. But failed to explain what those complications were or may be. Further more Mr A Ahmed came out of his consulting room, into the waiting area, and discussed her business in public.

As she started getting I'll we had said we noticed her weight climbing back up just as it did with the original kidney disease, by the way the kidney given was enlarged and infected. According to online reports nothing unusual for The Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

So my advice is to demand a CT scan as the numerous no of tests showed nothing, so it must be checked as an urgency.

I put on 50 lbs in 8 months after kidney transplant. Remember daughter is on meds which cause this. Steroids. It has been yr now and I can finally lose some weight. It is very hard. I left hospital at 195 and was close to 250 in 6 months or so. The Dr's keep telling me lose weight....I try but weight gain is fairly normal after transplant. I imagine with a woman it has to be frustrating. Tell your daughter weight gain is fairly common. I always tell myself it is worth the benefits. Rather be chunky post transplant recipient then skinny dialysis patient :)

When I got put on 10 mg of prednisone I dreaded it as I was always hungry! Weight shifted up and down so now when I am hungry I look for cucumbers, carrots, and peppers. It has helped!

Hello. I weighed around 109 before transplant. I weighed 123 after. Being small I was angry, which sounds silly. Some people do gain from transplant, especially with Prednisone, but I see your daughter is not on it. I heard that the other drugs can make you gain too, but I am not sure about it. Make sure to ask your doctor. I did lose the weight, but it took me a while. Best of luck to you and your daughter.

It's probably due to the prednisone. My son has gained also but it seems to be leveling out.

I was warned by my kidney team to expect to put on about 10kgms after the op even eating th same and that it would take some time to settle but the new kidney itself is quite heavy plus the amount of water you have to drink.
