Why must my mother make a big fuss over everything that I do. It’s not my fault that I’m musically inclined. What can I do to get her off me?

(I have ADHD and it comes with not being able to control my emotions)

Dear Legomegamind,

All mothers fuss because it is our greatest fear that we live with from the moment we discover we're pregnant that something will hurt our baby. And we fuss when our babies have serious illness because our instinct to protect is frustrated because we're very limited in how we can help and so our parental control is gone.

Having ADHD, I have it, doesn't mean you're not able to control your emotions, it means its harder for you to control your emotions. Does it make you feel like crap when you lose it with your mother for fussing over you? Have you told her that? Maybe try telling her that you understand she needs to fuss over you because she's frightened for you. but that her fussing over you drives her nuts and then you explode and that in turn makes you feel really bad.

Maybe I've got you all wrong, but if I haven't I hope this helps. Keep breathing and counting to ten, it's good for the ADHD!

Regards, Bearamary
