Looking for root cause

I think a possible root cause of my tinnitus might be mercury poisoning from a few old fillings which contain amalgam. I am scheduled to see an oral surgeon to evaluate this possibility. Wondering if others have explored this as a root cause after going to multiple other doctors and finding no answers. I have no hearing loss.

Extremely unlikely IMHO. Amalgam tooth fillings were / still are commonplace in the UK and if they caused T, the incidence of the condition would be far greater than it currently is.

You've indicated you have no hearing loss, but your profile indicates you are 79yo? With respect, hearing tends to deteriorate w/ age but the rate of hearing decline can be so slight / slow that individuals don't notice it as the brain adjusts to cope.

Tinnitus can often be idiopathic - no obvious cause. It can be a waste of time trying to determine what's caused it - even if you can pin down a cause, it's unlikely to lead you to anything to help treat the condition. You'll still have to find a way to deal with your T somehow.

Hi Shika1945

How long have you had Tinnitus?

I agree with Ruud1boy unfortunately. I spent a lot of time and money when I first heard my Tinnitus searching for root cause in the hope that finding it would result in me being able to switch my Tinnitus off.

It was only when I found acceptance that i had Tinnitus and I wasn't likely to find a root cause that i started to get better

I don't know what caused my tinnitus - I suspect too much partying when I was younger, long term use of non-steriodal anti inflammatory medication and/or age related hearing loss and the ongoing ear problems as a child. Whatever the cause, I don't need know! It is not going away because it is a long term condition that I need to manage. I spend my time - and money - on my overall health and wellbeing and ways to reduce my stress to be able to deal with life as it turns up, then, hopefully, my tinnitus does not get too 'shouty'. I hope that helps.

Hello, sorry that you have this condition.

I actually do know my root cause because it was a virus that also took away my sense of smell and taste. Most annoying, it’s like buy one and get two free!

A think my point is that while I know the cause it does me no good because I cannot do anything with that information. It does allow a cure and I cannot warn other people about.

I was offered some advice when my T started about 10 years ago which was to drop the cause and possible cure and instead work on making my life as good and comfortable as possible. I hope that makes sense.

I’m not saying you should do this I’m only sharing what I went through.

I wish you all the best, take care - Graham
