72 year old Tinnitus Sufferer.

I have suffered with Tinnitus and sensitive hearing for a number of years now, personally I feel it is rather bad but in reality I expect there are others who have it worse than I do. I try and cope by using a sound machine when it is at its highest point and try to keep my mind occupied generally to mask it. I have avoided the cinema, theatres and concerts as they ate much too loud for me to cope with, also the background noise of voices in busy places is not good for me. Recently I look the risk of going to see a singer/ comedian who I have seen in the past. I had to leave in the interval as it became unbearable. It did remind me how much I miss these events so I would like to ask if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can feasibly block out some of the noise/ volume. I do not get on very well with ear plugs. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks

if you don’t get on with earplugs, could you wear ear defenders? I know they are far less discreet, i wore mine to the cinema at the weekend, I feel like a bit of a wally but at least I was able to go!

Thanks for the suggestion, I shall have a look and see what is available, could have hidden the defenders in my long hair a few years ago, but alas, nothing left to hide them in nowadays.

Ahhh the joys of younger years! Actually the older I have got the less I care what I look like, good job really as I'm now wearing theses ear defenders! Peltor are a brand that do -37db protection, that's the maximum I have found. Although I have been trying to find some that look more like trendy headphones rather than contruction site workwear! Good luck!

Hi PineappleonpizzaI see what you mean in your comment

"Construction Site" they look very conspicuous don't they. Found some on Amazon which look fairly slimline but they are bright yellow so possibly not for me, shall continue looking.

Also another comment you made

"The older I get" I think at only 48 the word older does not apply.

Thanks for replying and the advice.

My NHS audiologist has just advised me to get some moulded ear plug filters from Specsavers. To be used when going to the cinema. I'm going to give it a try as l really miss going to movies. Went to one last week. The trailers and ads were playing at about 80 decibels (so 100 times louder than normal conversation at 60db). Heavens knows why cinemas set such an insanely high noise level.

Not what you're looking for?
