Treble health have this more up to date info : treblehealth.com/neuromodul...

from what i have read - Neuromodulation works for some people and not for others. In my case it would not work as i have T which reacts to noise input

the majority of people who have tinnitus and who have become habituated do not, I expect, use this site any more because they do not need to. So they will not see your post and be able to respond to your enquiry.

Habituation is just when something is still there but it doesn’t bother you any more. For instance, if you go for a walk in the countryside and you meet someone on the footpath you will notice them. If you go for a walk in a busy city you will see hundreds of people but you will take almost no notice of them.

I hope you have sought help from Tinnitus UK?

I have tried cbt for a few different things and it failed every time. I personally think it only works if you are not very clever. No amount of learning to think differently about pain is going to take away my pain, and it won’t take away my tinnitus. Cbt, in my opinion, is modern day quackery, often practiced by people who know little to nothing about psychology and instead have read a couple of textbooks on how to perform cbt. I think it just prolongs your suffering. It is good to read that actual experts and now questioning if cbt is worthwhile. I found the whole experience very insulting to my intelligence and the actual problems I had. I cannot tell you how much I hate it!

interesting response but i hugely disagree with parts of your statement. I do agree it may not work for all but it definitely had a positive impact on helping me deal with my tinnitus and hyperacusis. i consider myself quite intelligent, happy to elaborate on this if it helps.CBT helped me reframe negative thoughts into more logical reasoning which in turn i believe helped control the anxiety and stress that the tinnitus was causing. Prior to doing CBT i did not believe in the psychology approach to anything but this did work for me.

I do want to add though that the CBT person i used was specialised in tinnitus which I feel made it more effective for me.

As I said i do hear that CBT is not for everyone but I wouldnt blanket dismiss it for all.

My comment about it working for not very clever people was based on when I tried it to tackle depression. It went along the lines of this ‘you think badly about yourself. Instead of thinking badly about yourself why not think ‘hey, I’m a good person’’. It was that basic, and a lot of what it tries to do is trick you into ‘living with’ (that means don’t bother the NHS in the UK). How can I possibly think differently about my pain. It just hurts. My spine has disintegrated. I’m interested to heat you have had success with treating tinnitus as I honestly thought it was a joke when I first heard of people using it for that. Sadly I still think it’s a con. Go see a practitioner, pay them the money, and leave with no tablets. It’s very profitable. It keeps people suffering when there is no need. There are plenty of pills that cure my pain, but a cbt expert would just have me think differently about it. I find that a bit insulting, equally I’m off topic. I can’t see how it can possibly work for tinnitus, but if you say it did I’m happy for you. I tend to listen to white noise for my relief 😀

And i think thats fair. I cant see how CBT can have an impact on pain but maybe someone could enlighten me there. With Tinnitus, it is very linked to stress and i believe the power of CBT is reducing thoughts that create a negative stress feeling. ie why me? Is it going to be this loud for the rest of my life? I cant go on with this? etc.

By looking at the negative thoughts and thinking reasonably again ie. why me? well actually there are millions like me going through this. is it going to be this loud forever, well actually others are showing that there is habituation and you dont notice it any more. I cant go on? well actually you can and things will probably get better if you use management techniques.

It was a way of reframing negative thoughts that would ease stress as part of the toolbox to cope.

But i totally understand where you are coming from.

Actually i dont understand too, lke someone has cancer they would feel upset what makes cbt for tinnitus so special is tinnitus actually dont "hurt" you like a knife stabbing, but then its still disturbing , anyway let me quote some of the skill in the book here to see if u agree or not

I dont think its a con, but i can totally relate after i finish the book and its still all over my head

Like when somebody say something to piss u off and u cant let it go, cbt would ask u not to think u re not good enough, not to think people look u down etc...., but u know that cant reallg get me anywhere

No disrespect to people suffering from pain but at least there is some strong pain piller of coz not working all the time, but yeah tinnitus even got no tablets, however the research really prove cbt helps a lot of tinnitus patient , maybe i would think another way around, i am in a fool group , so wouldnt be beneficial from themI can really feel for u man, u know sometimes when people success in sth , they would disallow u to feel negative and tell u there is always hope. Thats just your personal opinions. What we need is more empathy and support. Coz sometimes keep people very positive would be a stress or even counterproductive when u see other can make it while u cant.

Sure, we do need more empathy. People sometimes make fun of me at work when I complain about my problems, but thankfully I’m the kind of person who gives as good as I get… But sure, some people think I’m faking, or it’s not a real problem. Again, if cbt helps, great. My reservations are about trying to use it for pain or depression. You are correct, there are tablets for these things, but I’m finding the first line of defence is becoming cbt, and it just doesn’t work for those conditions. I am happy it’s working for you and that’s reason enough to continue doing it. Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean nobody else can. I should have said something back at the start which I don’t think I did. The best think for my tinnitus- getting my hearing checked, finding out I have some hearing loss (which led to the Menieres diagnosis), the. Getting a hearing aid. That make a big difference in reducing tinnitus, and when I do get it I press a button and it plays white noise to cover it up. The hearing aid saved me from going mad. I’m 45 years old so felt a bit odd going home to my wife with something we usually think old people use, but she didn’t care. It’s lightweight, easy to use, and you wouldn’t even know I’m wearing it. I do have longish hair so that helps, but eve. If I was bald I don’t think many people would notice. Do consider this if you haven’t already. 😀

Yeah agree with what u said totallyPeople dont have to defend some treatment if doesnt work on us

Hey i got that ear device too, but so now u accept wearing it all the time innit?

vincentchan profile image
vincentchan in reply toLeehawkins3

Could u be more specific? I do believe somewhat they are helpful in some mental issue, but for tinnitus I somehow think the tinntius is actually intrusive, i have read a book called living well with tinnitus, its about cbt treatment for tinntius, they propose some idea challenge your thinking that tinnitus isnt that bad but easier said then done. They usually start with you can do what to distract or overcome the tinnitus distress, i never underestimate any other disease or hardness but tinnitus is intensely disturbing

Sorry a late reply.

I’m not sure how long it takes or if everyone does habituate but I’ve had 3 CBT sessions and after 8 years of T have not managed to habituate (yet!).

I know it’s different for individuals and possibly I’m doing it all wrong.

Hope you get there.
