My wife is troubled by a loud low frequency noise that only occurs in a particular room. No none else can hear it and a possible source for it can not be found. It is so real to my wife that she refuses to believe it is not being generated in that vicinity. Could this be tinnitus? Any one else have a similar experience?

A sound which doesn't come from an identifiable external source is a good definition of tinnitus - is it only perceived in this room or does your wife experience in other environments, or at other times of the day?
She only experiences it in a particular room - the living room. It occurs , and then persists, at various times of the day but usually late after noon . She knows approx. where it is coming from
It's unusual for tinnitus to be noticed in one location and not experienced anywhere else. Have other people commented on or experienced the same phenomenon?
My wife only complains about the hum when sitting in the living room although she has mentioned hearing it in our bathroom but at a much reduced level. It occurs most days and starts at different times. I've investigated possible sources of 50 and 100 Hrtz hum associated with electrical equipment; apparently switching them off does not stop the noise. My wife has convinced herself that the noise must come from an adjacent room next door because it does not follow her around. Are there any reports of medication or injections causing tinnitus, (if that is what it is), problems?
Hello, I get a low frequency humming type of tinnitus. I’ve had it for over 20 years. It’s most noticeable in my bathroom for some odd reason, but without masking I can hear it everywhere, even outside. It’s masked by the radio or TV mostly, but it’s certainly louder in some rooms than others. I thought it was something in the house humming, an electrical appliance, until one day we had a power cut and I could still hear it. In some parts of the country people do say they can hear a humming sound, I live in Bristol, and there’s a thing called the Bristol hum.
My tinnitus is up and down but when I'm in my bathroom I can hear a low hum too that is separate from tinnitus noise. It's not in any other room nor outside but I find if I tune into it my tinnitus can become quieter
I find that if I shake my head from side to side the noise stops, but as soon as my head is still it comes back again. I guess I’m hearing the humming of blood going through a vein close to my ear. It can change throughout the day for some reason. It’s often worse in the evening.
I know this might sound silly, even though I have tinnitus (some TV static channel noise in both ears). I sometimes hear things like that in certain rooms, and majority of times I find that certain plugs make noise. For instance I found only one cable charger that was constantly plugged into to socket, but when there was no device attached to it, I could hear this tiny annoying sound coming out if it. So I just unplug it all together. I know it might not help, but I do walk around rooms sometimes looking for the source and most times it is the cable/plug. I still have my tinnitus on top of that though
I experience very similar to your wife. My tinnitus is definitely more noticeable in my living room. My daughter tried altering the settings on my tv for me as I had read that having the colour too bright could affect tinnitus. We have also tried turning off all standby buttons etc but it’s still there. I’m sitting in my living room typing this reply and my tinnitus is quite bad . I don’t experience such loud tinnitus in any other room or other places I visit.
I have had tinnitus since having my ears syringed during lockdown. My ears became so blocked after an ear infection and cancelled appointments meant an even longer period before they were eventually micro suctioned. As soon as I left the drs the ringing , hissing started and it’s been there ever since.
I do hope your wife finds some peace as it is really uncomfortable and annoying.
M y T is worse if I fall asleep in the Lounge. Also heard from a friend who seems to have similar. I've put it down to the electricity from the stuff in the room or something like that. TV, computer, broadband . Doesnt happen in any other room.
Hi Dlanager,I used to hear a low hum when sitting in a particular living room seat. My partner could not hear it. After having the ceilings replaced, the floor space insulated and central heating pipes isolated from joists. I no longer hear it.
We all have different hearing ranges. My partner can hear buzzing from light bulbs and USB sockets.
