I always need background noise of some kind - usually the radio or music if I’m just pottering. It’s bed time I find the hardest as the T becomes so loud as there’s nothing to mask it. That’s when I find the likes of white noise can really help.

Personally, I find white noise a little too sharp and annoying - I’ve discovered there’s other ‘colours’ too. Brown noise I find more soothing 🙂

There are a great many masking sounds on Youtube, it’s well worth experimenting with them to find one or two that help you. Lots of positive comments from people too.

I would exercise caution when using white noise to sooth tinnitus, especially via Youtube. It obviously works for some people but it didn't work well for me. I had a very bad experience when I listened to white noise on Youtube via headphones at modest volume for a only few minutes. When I took the headphones off, the noise/hiss part of my tinnitus had gone down to virtually nothing but the high-pitch whistles went sky-high and it was really uncomfortable. I vowed that I would never listen to white noise again. I do have a sound-generator at my bedside and sometimes use it to mask my tinnitus, or at least distract my brain from it. I don't use the white noise or fan sounds but stick to the natural sounds, like birdsong, waves, thunder storm and campfire.

I would never use headphones or earbuds these days. I have a white noise machine by my bedside, it helps to mask my tinnitus. There are natural masking sound videos on YouTube too.
