Describe your Tinnitus

purenostalgia profile image
18 Replies

A will be attending my 4th appointment with my Audiologist since March on Friday.

I am remembering my first visit and how to describe my Tinnitus to him.

In a short sentence how would you describe your Tinnitus to friends and family?.

I have had plenty of time to think about it and come up with this " it's like having a pair of faulty headphones on that you cannot remove".

Take care

Mike

That’s a good one, purenostalgia, and not unlike mine. I have a badly tuned radio - but you probably wouldn’t get a younger person to understand what you mean by this as they tuned themselves, don’t they!

very good question - my tinnitus is multi tone buzzing , hissing - sometimes higher pitched - often just a strong mid tone - it can change - I am not sure what to compare it to -

Hi Mike. Hope all goes well Friday . I'm going to Audiology for the first time on Thursday .. My T is a steady high pitched hissing / buzzing sound in both ears . Louder in my deafer ear .

Good luck. 🍀 Mine's is like the droning sound of an airplane getting louder and louder with a hiss- like watery sound in the background. Louder in my right ear...

its the loudness of it that is a nightmare - as my T is reactive and goes up with even moderate noise - its more of a neurological issue rather than hearing loss

Mine is continuous undefined repetitive music. Also an engine noise that throbs away. From time to time get the sound that morse code is being sent! It is relentless and the louder the environment the worse it becomes. Hope your appointment goes well. X

A loud hissing noise and when the pulsatile tinnitus kicks in - my heart! Roll on 4/2. When I see ENT consultant

Hi, Purenostalgia,

Mine is a constant hissing, like gas escaping. Good luck with your appointment.

Respectfully submitted,

Keoni

5 sounds, one high in each ear, one midtone left ear, one which seems to hover and and often pulsatile whoosh in left ear. Never boring, but doesn't bother me too much.

For me, its like leaving a freezer door open and the high pitched screeching warning alarm going off until you shut the door.....except I cant shut the door !!!Its meant to disturb you....and it does !!!

Hi,I describe mine T as a screaming jet engine that you can never run away from.

My T noise is exactly like the time before children when my wife and I traveled on a small jet to Jersey. When we walked down steps the engines were still spinning down and she turned to ask me something. I cupped my hand over my ear against the very loud noise and shouted, ‘sorry, say that again’ but she couldn’t hear my reply as it was so loud!

No matter where I walk/run/cycle/drive/fly to I can never escape so I also tell people that as well as the loud invasive noise I have claustrophobia in my own head.

Hope this helps.

Very best to you, keep well.

I don't describe. I show them similar T on youtube (mine is 'escaping gas') and say "listen to this for 24/7 - wake up to this and go to sleep with it".

They get the idea :)

In this era I would expect Docs to show me examples to choose from (complementary to question). This upsets me a little - I often hear three different types of T:

- pure tone T - the 'real' tinnitus in my book

- low pulsating - this is easy, just blood going around

- escaping gas / hissing - the worst for me, as 24/7 and quite hard to ignore. If I stretch muscles in my neck - sound changes (so I still have hope)

My point is - this should be better categorized and not "Patient hear noises"

Like my neighbour's gas boiler (left ear); a fog horn in the distance in the right ear. The right ear has a secondary sound which is some kind of hum/whine.

Mine most often sounds like a tiny sheet of metal being dragged across the inside of my skull. Sometimes there is a humming component as if a vibrating phone is pressed up against my ear
