My Silver Bullet

Appointment with my Audiologist tomorrow, having the tubes and cups replaced on my hearing aides. only had them a couple of months.

On a lighter note, I have a confession to make, as a kid and for most of my life I have been a train spotter.

This is my silver bullet against Tinnitus, I have a train simulator game and can drive different locomotives all over the world, I have just driven a steam train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh in Scotland.

With the ambient sounds and concentration, I forget my Tinnitus just for an hour or two.

I hope this link is allowed as it will explain better than I can about ambient sounds, you also get to hear my voice Lol.

It is in full HD so make sure you click the cog on bottom right and make sure it is set to 1080p, we pass my home, it may just take your mind of tinnitus for a few minutes.

If the link does not work, copy and paste it into Youtube.

Thanks Mike. It's surprisingly soothing - listening to a train - and it did take my mind off T 🚂!!! My favourite journey is the line that runs thru Dawlish Warren right next to the sea .

Hope all goes well with the audiologist tomorrow .

i used to do the Aberdeen to Darlington train journey ( 4hr 30mins) to visit relatives in in N Yorkshire - passing over the Tay bridge at Dundee, Forth bridge , Tyne bridges - quite a good journey as u can see the coast for some parts of the way

Hi Suz, I have that route, plenty of sea and sand around Berwick on Tweed.

I love train travel Rabbit, not been on one for about 20 years, but this sim is 4K and on my 55" Samsung tv is like the real thing.

This is great. I forgot about the ringing in my ear there as I was enjoying the distraction. Thanks, Mike.

I love train journeys and used to do Edinburgh to Darlington regularly as a student and, more recently, Edinburgh to York and Glasgow to Skipton - as I love Yorkshire and travel down from Scotland for holidays.

Thanks I’ve noticed as well in times of concentration on something interesting with audio and visual I (sometimes) cannot found my T! It amazing until you realise then it comes crashing back. I keep trying to find a way to do this in my working day. No luck so far. Excellent train story!Best Graham

I can see and hear how that helps. When I struggle to sleep I use the ReSound Relief app.

It lets you mix sounds and the mix I use most has the train sound turned up. The regular track noise seems to help a lot.

What is your train simulator called and where can you get it?

I bought it from Steam see link below, you do have to install Steam on your computer to keep it up to date.

You also need a computer with good specs, I find it does not run very well on laptops.

There is 15% off at the moment, but in the Christmas sale it is normally 50% off.

As it's a sim do you actually get to drive the trains? Or do you just get to select the train and route taken?

purenostalgia profile image
purenostalgia in reply todeafdj

You drive the trains, each route comes with a selection of scenarios, say Newcastle passenger to Edinburgh, or potash freight over the Settle to Carlisle Route.

The sim comes with about 5 routes a couple from USA a couple from GB and maybe a German Route.

You can purchase extra routes that cover most of the uk at about £24 each.

I have never paid full price, as in the Christmas Sale all but the latest routes are 50% off.

You can design your own routes and scenarios.

You do need a very fast laptop or decent desktop.

Might look into before Christmas. Not sure if my laptop will be up to it. In my 58 years I have only had the opportunity to travel by train maybe 3 or 4 times. It looks like I won't get the chance to travel to England again anytime soon. And trains in NI are only available in the North & East of the province

purenostalgia in reply toSuz_2

I do not wear them at night Suz, so no change, but they help during the day.

Hi Mike I watched this today - purenostalgia - about the London underground and stories behind different stations.

I've got Virgin TV (it was on Virgin channel 129 10am to midday) Really interesting. Love all the underground signs and original tiles.

Hope you got on ok at your audiology appointment. 😊

Thanks Mike, I know when I did/do something I enjoy and/ore engrossed in I don't 'hear' my T. When I first had T I used this type of distraction technique quite a lot (I played online video games). When I talked to a really eminent audiologist he said it is very easy to shrink our lives when we get T so its important to do things we enjoy as not only helps us to live 'normally' but as they are things we enjoy we get engrossed on them and our brains then focus on the enjoyable task rather than the sound of our T. For me I found this type of distraction technique very useful in reducing my focus on my T and eventually taking its power away. Stay safe
