Speech Recognition

I had a speech recognition test which came back very low in one ear. In that same ear I have tinnitus and hyperacusis.

I would appreciate any advice or help with this or further tests that can be done

I had an MRI which came back clear

Hi JoJomac23.

It's a positive sign that your MRI didn't reveal any underlying issues. You've mentioned a speech recognition test with lower than normal results - did this form part of a general hearing check at the hospital?

My understanding is that this testing forms part of the overall checking process and when cross-referenced can be used to indicate a level of hearing loss.

From that point, and depending on the results of those tests, it would seem that consulting an audiologist about having masking devices or hearing aids fitted would be a normal approach to take.

In terms of hyperacusis, again the treatment paths will depend to some extent on hearing levels. Increased sensitivity to sound levels might benefit from support from a hearing therapist, whom your audiology department should be able to connect you with.
